Clemson beat Alabama in the national championship game on Monday night, 35-31, a thrilling end to a very good college football season. The Tigers won the game with a play run with just a few seconds remaining, when quarterback Deshaun Watson rolled to his right and found 5-foot-10 receiver Hunter Renfrow wide open in the corner of the end zone.
He looked almost a little too wide open. And thus began the scrutiny.

“Unless of course the defender grabs the receiver and pulls him down, which of course is what really happened.”
exactly!
I hope he likes FAU, because that’s probably the only gig he’s gonna have for awhile.
There is a youtube video of ‘bama using the same play against LSU in 2014.
If ‘bama was so great how did they end up in this position at the end of the game. There were probably around 150 or so plays prior to this one, and from what I’ve noticed over the years, the refs could call a penalty on almost any play - if they go by a strict interpretations of rules. Sometimes they don’t call a late hit or sometimes they don’t call a clip because it was 25 yards away from the play - but it was still a clip, etc. Refs use judgement in their calls (a friend of mine is a H.S. football ref) and therefore there will always be controversy.
Whatever, from the article, even players on the sideline were yelling “watch for the pick” - Alabama needed to play 60 minutes but they played 59:59. Too bad.
The guy that lariated Watson should have been kicked out of the game. And so should have the DB that speared Williams in the helmet twice. Pathetic.
Do you have to have cable TV to watch WATCHESPN? WE Have comcast internet...not cable
I think you have to have cable TV.
Clemson lead a grand total of 2 minutes out of 60. But for some reason they are being called “better than Alabama”. That my friends is a joke. If Scarborough hadn’t got hurt Alabama would have probably blown them out. Clemson almost lost to 6 teams this year. That’s right, 6. If not for NC State missing a 20 yard FG there would have been no Clemson in the title game.
How about Dak Prescott?
Looks like a valid play to me
it was borderline...some refs are going to call it, some won’t; actually glad the refs chose not to call it on the final play of the game...
the earlier pick TD that Clemson had should have been flagged; one of the receivers contacted a second defender attempting to make on play on Mike Williams...offensive PI, IMHO...
Yes Jalen Hurts is a freshman
Hurts has regressed as the year proceeded; much like Barrett of OSU has nosedived from his play last year...
Bama wins the game easily if they have a QB of no more than average skill at throwing the ball...
Losing Scarbrough, really killed Bama. It’s unusual that it would matter who is in the backfield for Bama, but he was a difference maker.
while the PI the next to last play of the game was, well, meticulous?
the problem with that call is that it didn’t in fact occur in the end zone as the refs said; this placed the ball at the two, when it should have been somewhere around the seven...
a pick play is more problematic if the defenders have more room in the end zone to move around...
Losing Scarbrough, really killed Bama
it sure didn’t help, but his replacements averaged six yards a carry; not much of a fall off...
they needed to run the ball more when they had the lead; Hurts can’t make decisions with the ball in his hands, and resorts to throwing it out of bounds to avoid sacks...
