One more: “Guinevere”, by Crosby Still & Nash.
How could I have forgotten that one

I dunno, that young guy who sings the Nationwide coomercial song is absolutely superb! He has perfect pitch and command of his instrument seldom heard in pop culture.

Sorry, Ted!

"Invincible". "Shadows of the Night". "Juke Box Hero". "Sultans of Swing". "Heartbreak Hotel". "Pretty Woman". "Running on Empty". "Proud Mary" ...
Etc ...
Like you said, too much good R&R out there to name a "best".
To: Windflier
Yeah, I was thinking Ted wouldn’t be too thrilled being confused with Axl. Lol.

I like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but it always seemed like a novelty song to me.

Not impressed.
The song is highly over rated to begin with.

I know I am in the minority, but I revere middle-period Beach Boys above all.
SMiLE was recorded almost entirely by the end of 1966 - months before any of Sgt. Pepper’s was recorded. If it had been released by Capital in January of 1967 as scheduled, and had The Beach Boys headlined the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967 as scheduled, Rock History would have been written differently.
There is some amazing music to be found in their seldom-aired 1966-1973 era (before personal and economic factors essentially turned them into an oldies act).
Having said all that, if I had to pick that One Song, with respect for Bohemian Rhapsody, it would nevertheless be Stairway to Heaven.

I agree with you about Orbison, but I would not put him and Mercury in the same category.
Orbison was a “singer”.
Mercury was a “rock screamer”.
Not saying one is better than the other - just that its comparing apples and oranges.
(I am beginning to regret ever commenting on this thread, because all music - even that which is objectively NOT “music” such as cRAP - is largely subjective).
To: Simon Foxx
I disagree. I've never heard of Queen or Freddie Mercury or Bohemiam Rhapsody. But then that might be because they were AFTER my time. I loved R & R in the 60 & 70s and then lost interest completely after that when disco came along.
My vote is for Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues, who has a great, enduring rock voice.
Nights In White Satin was and still is a classic that Hayward wrote when he was only 19 years old.
