"Copulations are incredibly rare," Kempenaers said. "The males need to try and try and keep at it."...

adding that it "will make me think differently about every pectoral sandpiper I see during the summer."

"Researchers tracked one desperate small shorebird that logged more than 8,100 miles in two dozen different hook-up attempts over a frenetic four weeks."
haha... I admire the ambition.

This article is feeding into the “binary” and “hetero normative” categories of sex issues, which liberals find abhorrent.

What about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered birds? What about their hookups? What about their mating rituals? How far do they go to connect with someone????

That looks like a baby killdeer. I’ve caught a couple of them when I use to farm way back in the day.

The mommas must have been frantic.

Killdeer chicks have the classic *neck-ring*. Still, awfully cute.:)

Killdeer are beautiful, amazing and crazy. I don’t know how they make it to adulthood with the ground nesting. I guess crazy mama Killdeer faking an injured wing, dragging it along while crying “Killdeer Killdeer!” might have something to do with it, lol. Fire ants are decimating them in the south, though. Mama’s theatrics have no effect upon those evil things.

Just when their eggs are laid, it seems the farm starts to plow for spring planting.

Tough life. Tough birds. It’s amazing any survive. You’d think they’d have it figured out by now, and adapted to putting their nests in less-traveled places.

Sorry to hear about those fire ants.
