There were bullets flying at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when 13 people were shot. Five of them didn't make it out of the baggage claim area alive. And Steve Frappier was lucky. He credited his Apple MacBook Pro for saving his life.
The 37-year-old traveler from Atlanta brought his school-issued lap top, because he was going to an education conference. He placed it in his backpack, but didn't think of it when he felt an impact on his back during the shooting.
"I was wearing a backpack on both shoulders and then when we went to the floor, I dropped and the backpack was still on my back," Frappier said during an interview with CNN.

The man is VERY fortunate that he had an Apple laptop instead of a PC laptop; otherwise he would, with near certainty, have been yet another wounded or dead victim.

I had a strong urging to buy concealable body armor a couple days before this event, searched for any alternative setup that would suffice, be practical and not obvious.
Problem is what would TSA do if you went through security with it on? Even if it was the latest such as Dragonskin?
I still have options of buying outerwear such as a leather jacket that has some spectra or kevlar built in, gives some protection, like a level 1. I can travel with a motorcycle jacket thats designed to have elbow and shoulder protection, even back plastic plates.
Now that i’m thinking about this i do have kevlar scraps, spectra high test fishing line and urethane bed coating material, might just upgrade my riding jacket for that “just in case” moment, and avoid getting shot in the head. Situation awareness, all the time now.
I’ve heard several stories of Apple products stopping bullets, but not any competing products...

I own a MacBook Pro. Not that I’d ever do it, but I can imagine a 9mm bullet could probably get through pretty easy at point blank range with nothing else to hit. OTOH, we are talking about not one but three aluminum surfaces (mac) versus three layers of plastic (pc). I don’t know the physics, but I imagine more energy is spent trying to get through the aluminum. Add enough other stuff before and after and in-between, and yes, I think there’s going to be some difference in performance. It’s really a question of how much difference. Sounds like a job for Myth Busters.
BTW, I’ve heard similar stories about pocket bibles stopping bullets. But multilayered paper is really a great way to expend a lot of energy, so I don’t find that surprising at all.

Some laptops have plastic shells surrounding a metal frame. The MacBook line has used a machined aluminum unibody shell for many years. So, with the MacBook folded up in a backpack, the kid had the shock lining of the backpack to help absorb the impact and the deformation of two layer of aluminum in the laptop (base and lid) to absorb energy.
Why didn’t the Mac shoot back?
Just use Flex Steel. It works great on storm door boats!
Ok, just took a break, went to ebay, plenty of cheap level III dyneema panels for sale, 28 layers, 3/8ths thick, flexible.
The idea was modifying some of my bike clothing, i bought kevlar scraps years ago, used 120 lb spectra fishing line as sewing thread, used urethane bed coating to keep the weave from seperating and sewed them into the knees of my carhart pants in case i had a motorcycle accident.It worked well without using bulky plastic pads.
Of course if money wasn’t an issue one can buy bullet ‘resistant’ jackets. Of which may save your life.
Being in a warmer climate though makes wearing soft armor in any style problematic, which does concur wuth a possible reason why this shooter went to Florida. Or why he didn’t erupt in Alaska, which is where i’m at right now, we all wear heavy coats.
I would love to know what kind of an argument he had with other passengers on the plane according to reports.
I saw an episode on Mythbusters about the armor effects of flexsteel, rhinoliner and other urethane coatings, amazing stuff! But the practicalty is an issue, kinda like walking around wearing chain mail armor, people actually do that i have found out, vey effective against knife attacks, but heavy unless its titanium.
I know a fair amount about chain mail, butted versis riveted, aluminum versus mild steel and other metals, very interesting that one can use modern day tech and chain mail, like shark suits. Not so good against bullets though.

Recently I tried to destroy a hard drive with a hammer.
Amazing how tough they are, The type with a spinning disc.
The case was tough and the disc itself was really tough.
Best I could do is dent it.
I can see a hard drive stopping a soft / hollow point.
