After generations of his family spent their lives as outlaws for making the infamous Irish poitín, Pádraic Ó Griallais has finally been able to carry out the family business in the open just under a decade after the spirit was outlawed.
Taking a career break from his job as a high school teacher to establish a new business based on his old family recipe, Ó Griallais is free to produce and sell the highly alcoholic spirit as he pleases without the interference of the Gardaí [Irish police], who hounded the previous poitín distillers in his family with raids to put a stop to the production of the beverage that was outlawed from 1661 to 1997 due to excise regulations.
The production of the spirit was regulated by the Irish Department of Agriculture in 1997 but only under their specific regulations. Luckily the regulations still allow Ó Griallais to use the botanical bogbean that grows around his familys homeland around Indreabhán, County Galway, that makes their specific recipe so special.

Ohhh...SQUEEEe! Makes me want to give it da hugz!
The wind is still blowing, after three days and nights, and I’m thinking I’m living in a wind tunnel.
The local What-Passes-For-News is once again blathering about putting metal detectors in all middle and high schools, after eleven guns have been brought in by students.
And now, she sez, it’s Howdy Doody Time, and I’m headed for the shower to try and warm up!

I used to always push my way through a book once I started it.
I gave that up for Lent some time back.

It’s raining here. I’m off to Walmart with Pat. Then I have my prayer group. Then we might go to the library.
I give up a book if I don’t like it or just find something that interests me more this week. It’s hardest with murder mysteries: once someone’s dead, I want to know what happened.

Our heat wave continues. Up to 49 Fs for today’s high. Considering it was very low 20s just this weekend we have no end of sinus and joint issues around here.
And that sinus plague doesn’t take into account the black dust that we are always wiping off the surfaces.

If I can’t get into a book by the end of the first page, I give it up as a bad job. I’ve always been that way.

Had my shower and been to Walmart, and didn’t pick up some of the things on my list because I got distracted. Darn. I hate when I do that.

Yes, I want to know how they died, too! Once in a while, though, the chase isn’t worth it.

My mom’s rule was 3 chapters. I’ll usually give it that.
Except now they throw in chapters breaks randomly so you won’t put the book down.

You sound like my dog.
She’s doing her little dance like she’s going to produce, I’m reaching into my pocket to get her bag ready, then suddenly she looks across the street and it’s all over.

When I worked at Signetics my employee number was 333. And within three months of being hired on, I joined the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and my membership number was also 333.

Cahill’s “How the Irish Saved Civilization” is a book I cannot recommend too highly.
Whatever your favorite genre, romance, science fiction, history, religion, or mystery, you’ll find a kindred narrator beguiling you with a fascinating tale.
And this is one you can brag about to your lower-brow fellow readers. It tells a fascinating story that you can use as an entry for many paths of study.
