Sri Lanka unveiled a towering Christmas tree on Saturday, claiming to have surpassed the world record for an artificial Christmas tree despite a shorter-than-planned finished product.
The 73-metre tree, built in capital Colombo, is 18 metres taller than the current record holder China, organisers said.
The tree's steel-and-wire frame is covered with a plastic net decorated with more than 1 million natural pine cones painted red, gold, green and silver, 600,000 LED bulbs and topped by a 6-metre-tall shining star.

What in the WORLD is that little Hindu-Muslim country doing with a Christmas tree? I thought all non-Christians hated Christmas and everything about it.
239.501 feet, that is a big one for sure.
70.19% Theravada Buddhists
12.60% indus
09.70% Muslims (mainly Sunni)
07.40% Christians (6.1% Roman Catholic and 1.3% other Christian).
So overwhelmingly Buddhists

We wish you all a Theravada Christmas!
Buddhists don’t have any problems with celebrating other religions’ holidays. I think the only large group of people anywhere who don’t celebrate the Christmas season is the Muslims.
Or at least tolerate it and are not in the least offended by it. Yes, only Muslims fall into the totally intolerant category.
Just the existence of a Christmas tree that large must be triggering any leftys that know about it.
How tall is that in American?
Seriously... I'm sick of Eurocentric liberals imposing their language on us.
Your national flag is missing from your home page.
From Google: Buddhists believe Gautama Buddha was a man, a great teacher, and--of course--an enlightened being. They follow his teachings, they try to emulate him. They do not consider him a god and they do not worship him. Idolatry is not part of Buddhism.
I remember the "right paths," the "four right paths" or something like that. No god. Basically they say that it's good to be good because it's good. Circular logic.
Our family friend from Sri Lanka brings us back tea when she visits, so, yes, they still make tea.
Their family is Buddhist. It looks to me like Buddha is their venerated hero, like a Catholic saint, not a deity. There is an annual religious procession of the relic of Buddha’s ear, for example. The family also goes to temple every week, which features instruction and meditation.
However, our friends do celebrate a secular Christmas and have a wreath on their door.
Why is ABC News using meters instead of feet? I thought it was an American news service.
Probably because it is an AP article. I have no problem with the metric system BTW. Much easier to use instead of fractions of feet and inches when calculating linear measurements and more so when calculating volume.Ever wonder why pipe yards use tape measures in tenths of a foot instead of inches when adding the lengths of pieces of pipe?
I only noticed the .au address of the source after I posted my comment. Whoopsie.
As to the metric system, I’m fully aware of its value in many applications. My gripe has to do with those who use it to express dimensional concepts while casually speaking before American audiences.
I hear it all the time on science programs today. I’m sorry, but that’s just inconsiderate, given that the average American has to stop and do a mental calculation every time they hear someone express dimensions that way.
It’s especially galling to me when I hear an American doing it.
