My favorite rendition of the song is from the movie, “Meet Me In St. Louis”; starring Judy Garland. She sings the song in the movie .. and I always cry.

Judy's, as well as other early versions contain the line, "Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow." This seems to have been replaced with "hang a shining star upon the highest bough."
