Just because it's a revelation to you doesn't mean that we weren't aware of it. And it doesn't hinder my defense of the Constitution or the Union in the slightest. A case could be made that reference to indentured servitude doesn't mean protection of the institution - especially the abomination that the slavocracy created.
It says the laws of the state where such labor is due. That pretty much means so long as a single state has slavery, you know, like the Union States of Maryland or Missouri, the rest of the Union is obliged to accept it.
Of course many states chose to deliberately disobey this portion of the Constitution, which just goes to show that they didn't really care about what was constitutional law, they just wanted their own way.
In effect, they broke the compact first, but nobody ever bothers to point this out.
Davis was a stupid man. Anderson told Beauregard’s emissaries before the bombardment started he would surrender the fort on Noon April 15th due to a lack of provisions. Sumter had no heavy guns mounted to fire on Charleston. Anderson did manage to get some smaller caliber guns reposition to face Charleston. All of the forts big guns faced the harbor entrance. Anderson had no fuses for any of his ammunition, they had been captured when Confederate forces captured the Charleston arsenal. The Federal Navy was not going to run the batteries outside of Charleston at night because they did not know the conditions of the Confederate batteries. So at most the Confederates would have fired on row boats, carrying salt pork and hardtack. Stanton was not the Secretary of War at the time. Cameron was the Secretary of War. Sumter was of no significant military threat to Charleston, with no proper ammunition, 100 men, 10 of which were musicians, no provisions. What galled Davis was the fact is that the Flag of the United States flew over that post. That was why he ordered the fort to be fired on. Davis’s Secretary of State, Robert Toombs told Davis attacking Sumter “will lose us every friend at the North. You will only strike a hornets nest. Legions now quiet, will swarm out and sting us to death. It is unnecessary, it puts us in the wrong, it is fatal.
The five ships of the re-provision operation for Sumter did not carry 35,000 men. Tell me, how many men of this armada on set foot on South Carolina. The Blockade of Southern ports was ordered on April 19th. It was in response to the act of war committed by the Confederate President, on April 12th i.e. firing on a Federal fort and authorizing Confederate piracy against ships flying the United States flag.
Actually the first bloodshed was the Battle of Big Bethel on June 10 1861 near Newport News Virginia. Soldiers of the United States were killed by the Confederate counterparts in that battle

How many times are we going to go through this Lampster, huh? How many times? The South opened fire on Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor. jeez you are thick-headed.
You are so dense it’s utterly amazing. This is the United States not the federally controlled states. Any state today and yesterday is free to leave but must be voted on to join. Using force to compel unity is coercion plain and simple.
I’m glad we are all here today but evil in the past is still evil. Both sides and neither excuse the other.
Free people under the constitution have a right to tree association. Do you, as big as a idiot and blasphemous as you are deny it? I don’t care our opinion one way out another but my guess is your not even an american. My guess is from Europe so GF yourself.
The tree of liberty must be watered. I assume it’s not always successful.
Well said. Bravo. However friend speaking to these Johnny Reb wannabes and Confederacy defenders is like trying to talk sense to a mule.
If California, Oregon decides it wants out next month and raises its own army for its national sovereignty (yeah I’m really stretching here) are you for or against that version of states rights?
If they succeeded for the sole purpose of creating a sanctuary city and state independent of the federal government are you for or against that version of states rights?
If your answer to either of those questions is no then fine but it should be yes. States should not be compelled through force or other means to reside in the union period. If the United States is not a benefit to the states as described in the constitution then states should leave.
If you call commitment to the rule of law "compelled through force" then no one can help you. If California can convince Congress and the other states to let her go and come up with an equitable exit plan then I say fine - bon voyage.
But if they deign to play parlor tricks or out & out insurrection like the con-feds did then you bet I'll help put them down.
