Norman Lear actually walked a very fine line with the Archie Bunker character.

Archie might have been a right wing bigot, but the many times he was right; the many ways in which his world views were correct were very spot on.

Maude on the other hand came across as a bitter old liberal shrew. Which is in perfect harmony with all older liberal womyn.

I remember reading recently about how his “meathead” son-in-law apparently abandoned his family and son and how Archie took over responsibility for the child and raised him.
