Nothing excessive about the Rifleman’s gunplay.

I think he was the inspiration for Al Bundy's favorite TV show, "Psycho Dad."

Don Knotts once asked Carl Reiner what Dick Van Dyke was like.

“You’re a real nice guy, Don. Dick is nicer.”

I always wondered who Lucas was blasting with those twelve shots on Main Street. Then the sly, small grin that follows...did he dispatch twelve to their maker? Or did the citizens of North Fork simply pay him for an exhibition?

The opening sequence has been controversial since the show came out:

“The 1892 Winchester in .44/.40 caliber used on the show only holds eleven bullets. The audio track was dubbed over the video track. They are not entirely in sync. You may hear 12 or 13 shots fired in the audio portion, and you may watch him pull the lever back on the rifle a different number of times.”

Al Bundy had a theory about that. In a conversation with his neighbor Jefferson, Al noted that Lucas McCain was a widower. He then states that it's his belief Lucas was blowing away his wife during the opening credits.

Who’s that riding in the sun?
Who’s the man with the itchy gun?
Who’s the man who kills for fun?
Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad.

He sleeps with a gun
but he loves his son
Killed his wife ‘cos she weighed a ton.
Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad.

A little touched or so we’re told
Killed his wife ‘cos she had a cold
Might as well she was gettin’ old
Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad.

The gif maker doesn't do the sound in slow motion, but to me it looks like he pulled the lever back 12 times and it sounds like 12 shots at the video link. The sync seems a little off in the beginning, but looks good after the sixth shot. What do you think?

I used to play it slo-mo on my TiVo. Looked like the sound sync was off. Also, where are the ejected cartridges?

The quote I posted says this was noticed from the very beginning of the show. It says they stuffed as much sound as they could into the time slot without worrying about sync of pic and sound!

Wow, I just watched these two episodes! What excellent writing! I hope they bring back this show. I saw it in reruns when I was a kid and the wit was clearly over my head. Very funny indeed. A real Jewish sensibility. Reminds me of the older adults around when I was a kid.

How come there are no shells being ejected from the gun? :-)

“Bonanza (heterosexual men)”

You must have missed the episode with Wayne Newton.

I always thought “B-Movies” were those films produced independent of the “studio system” prevalent back in the golden era of Hollywood. It was kind of a class-conscious way of labeling films, but really had nothing to do with the quality of the product, because as we all know the big studios were just as capable of producing stink bombs as independent producers.

Yes, it is. A lot of people say it is the very best of all time...and I have to agree. There is nothing as memorable.

Rifleman yesterday featured a new teacher that lectured Lucas on bringing loaded firearms to school.

If that was the one where Mark's friend puts the jujube in the teacher's book, the teacher was the same actor who later played Kodos the Executioner in the Star Trek season 1 episode "Conscience of the King."

I love watching the old TV shows that feature actors before I first saw them as a kid. Earlier on Saturday was the episode of The Big Valley where the old gypsy grandmother was played by the actress who later played the Vulcan Priestess T'Pau in the episode "Amok Time."
