UPDATE: 9:30 p.m.

The Ramsey Canyon Fire has been recalculated at an estimated 20 acres, not 50, according to Forest Service officials.

UPDATE: 8:15 p.m.

The fire has been given the name the Ramsey Canyon Fire by Coronado National Forest officials and is estimated to be 50 acres in size.

Forest Spokeswoman Heidi Schewel said the fire is burning between Carr and Ramsey canyons and is not making much progress.

“Fire activity is minimal. It’s up at the top of a ridge line and it’s not really moving right now,” Schewel said.

In addition to local fire crews, an inmate team from the Douglas area has responded as well.

“We also have the Douglas crew from the Arizona Division of Forestry and Fire Management on scene. That’s a Department of Corrections crew,” she said. “There will be another crew from the state arriving tomorrow for mop up if things go as planned.”

SIERRA VISTA — Residents near the top of Carr Canyon have been asked to voluntarily evacuate the area after a fire in the canyon broke out this evening.

“It is our fire, at least as far as I can tell. Palominas Fire District is coming to help, so are Fort Huachuca and the Forest Service,” said Mike McKearney, interim fire chief of the Fry Fire District.

Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputies have been dispatched to the area as well.

“They have asked some people who live in Carr toward the top or in the middle if they would voluntarily evacuate,” while others are being asked to prepare to leave if need be, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

Calls to the U.S. Forest Service Saturday night have not been responded to as of 8 p.m.

Sierra Vista Fire Marshal Paul Cimino said Fry Fire District and other local fire crews are stationed near structures in the canyon to protect them from any possible damage, while the fire itself seems to be moving north toward Apache Peak.

“It’s moved up the grass line and looks like it moved over to one side. It’s not moving rapidly, from what they tell me,” Cimino said.

Meanwhile, Sierra Vista fire crews are moving to bolster Fry Fire stations whose crews have dispatched to the fire.

Updated:Sunday, December 11th 2016, 1:32 am EST

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Firefighters are responding to a brush fire south of Sierra Vista, according to Coronado
National Forest officials.

The brush fire was first reported just after 6:45 p.m., according to Carol Capas,
spokeswoman for CCSO.

She said a few people voluntarily left, but the sheriff’s office has urged everyone to
leave and avoid the area around Carr Canyon Road as of 8:30 p.m.

An information center has been set up near Carr Canyon Road and State Route 92, according
to the CCSO update.

The fire is burning on a ridge top between Ramsey Canyon and Carr Canyon, according to
Heidi Schewel, spokeswoman for Coronado National Forest.

She said the Ramsey Canyon Fire has burned approximately 50 acres as of 8:30 p.m. By 9:10 p.m.,
Schewel said that estimate dropped to 20 acres.

She credited a drop in temperatures and an increase in humidity as a boost to the
firefighting effort.

She said there is minimal fire activity. Agencies responding include Coronado National
Forest, Palominas, Fry Fire Department and a hand crew from Arizona Department of Forestry
and Fire Management.

Schewel said more resources have been ordered for the morning.

Warm and dry conditions in December mean Coronado National Forest is still very much in
fire season, according to Schewel.
