Johnny Depp Is Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actor For The Second Year In A Row
Forbes ^ | December 7, 2016 | Natalie Robehmed

Posted on 12/07/2016 1:00:27 PM PST by C19fan

Just as Alice Through the Looking Glass hit theatres in May, a judge ordered a restraining order against its star, Johnny Depp, after his wife, Amber Heard, alleged he physically and verbally abused her. The couple reached a $7 million divorce settlement in August, but not before the $190 million sequel to Alice in Wonderland crashed at the box office.

Thanks to recent ticket booth losses, Depp is this year's most overpaid actor: His last three movies returned just $2.80 at the box office for every $1 he was paid on them. While the damning accusations did not impact his earnings during our scoring period, they look set to damage his box office prospects for months to come. It's the latest bad career news for Depp, who has suffered some high profile misses including last year's Mortdecai and 2014's Transcendence.

Bradley Cooper should improve in 2017 with the 2nd "Guardian of the Galaxy" movie being released. :0

He was pretty good in Black Mass.

Ed Wood is still one of my all-time favorites.

I liked him in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But I wouldn’t think he’d fit in too many other roles.

Not really a high mark to reach. If Depp were paid one dollar, he’d still qualify.

He made a boat load of money and box office as Captain Sparrow.

It’s like overkill with Depp being in movies these day. I don’t even bother watching them anymore. The only one’s I like are the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The rest I haven’t watched.

I never got into the Pirates franchise. I saw Charlie and.. on DVD and Edward Scissorhands when it was released.

For the all time record, you have to go back to the twilight of Chevy Chase’s movie career, then inflate those compensation and box office numbers to today’s dollars. I have to think that he was the all time biggest loser, with a string of films (4-5)that gave him $15-20M up front, which returned nothing.

A thing is worth what another pays for it.

The only one’s I like are the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

The first one was really good, but the remaining in that series just got more dark and more strange. His initial scene in the first movie is a classic.

I liked Pirates of the Caribbean. I think I only saw the first one.

I can’t believe Angelina Jolie didn’t make this list. With the exception of Maleficent, it seems like every movie she’s in is a bomb.

I think Depp’s biggest problem is that he is too fond of working with Tim Burton, basically willing to go along with any kooky project that Burton dreams up, whether it will make money or not.

Plus, despite being handsome, Depp is just not the traditional leading man type that tends to carry big budget movies. He’s too much of an oddball at heart, and he really does his best in oddball roles.

I thought The Tourist was one of his better pictures. For once he didn’t overplay his role.

He's been making movies since 1984. Thirty two years. And except for the Disney Pirates series no two of them had performances that were at all alike. He's not to everyone's taste but in everything he's done he takes over every scene. And the films he's made that are memorable are so because of his performance (with the possible exception of Martin Landau's tour de force as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood ... that was classic).

Does that make Tim Burton the most overpaid director? Seems like Depp’s in all his movies.
