85 languages spoken in Buffalo schools as 'New Americans' enter classrooms

The two young Somali sisters sat at a table in the central registration center signing up for what would become their next big challenge in their journey to America – school.

They came to enroll in the Buffalo Public Schools at an old building on Ash Street, an Ellis Island of sorts for thousands of immigrants and refugees entering an education system that has struggled over the years to keep up with their growing numbers.

Many show up speaking no English. Others may have had little formal education in their home countries. Most encounter vast cultural differences.

The City of Buffalo has taken in thousands of immigrants and refugees in recent years, and it’s reflected in many of its schools. More than 85 different languages are spoken throughout the district, but that number can change by the day.

English language learners now make up 15 percent of the district’s enrollment, and as a whole, they are among the lowest-performing, state figures show. They also are the fastest-growing segment.

The infiltration is becoming overwhelming, we need to get back on a sane track or we're finished.

Speak English or fail. Worked for our grandparents, ought to work now too. Kids learn languages very easily from their peers, even when English isn’t spoken in the home.

If they’re not speaking English — they are NOT Americans.

I was using the computer at my local public library this week, and then I realized it now has three language options available: English, Spanish, Somali.

And put a hold on all forms of immigration. One year moratorium. We need to sort this stuff out.

The Federalist Papers, John Jay gave thanks that “Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people,”

a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs.”

That would have tipped me right over the edge.

Up to age 12 or so. After that age, the language learning facility declines. Of course, there’s a wide range of ability levels, and some people can pick up languages easily even as adults.

Buffalo has been amongst the leading population losers for the past few decades (a combination of harsh weather and unreal NY State taxes).

Mayors in such places are deliberately IMPORTING as many immigrants as they can to keep their raw population numbers up for the next Census.

Trying to stem the loss of Congressional seats, Federal funding and electoral college votes.

I had a family of Eritreans live next door to me for a time. Christians! How the heck did they sneak in here!? Anyway, the woman’s sister came to live with her for a time. The sister had a husband and a daughter. The little girl at the time was about 4 or 5. She spoke Tigrinya, some, but mostly Dutch as they were there for a short time. Within just a few weeks she was speaking English. Not just a little English, but speaking it very well. It was amazing. The younger the better as far as adapting.

As far as immigration, I’m seeing it VERY much where I live in the Denver area. We need a halt to it. We’ve already let in too many third worlders. Some of them, like the family I lived next door to, are hard working and very decent people. I have no problem with them. But, as we know, Christians are the exception. Too many Muslims are being let it, and a large population of Muslims is not a good thing for any country.

Buffalo is the 3rd poorest city in the nation.

Their public schools spend approx. $23,000 per student and achieve an approx. 50% graduation rate.

Their enrollment has been declining about 2-3% per year over the last couple decades as people flee the city.

In SUM: Progressive-left NY State Government and its cronies’ poverty pimping is the only business they know. This business must be maintained at all costs.

English should be the official language for this country. I'm all for learning foreign languages but all business/education, etc is to be conducted in English in this country.

It's only natural for a country to control its language.

Some of my ancestors came to America in the early 1900s. They learned English, starting on the boat, and as far as I know refused to speak any other language in front of their children. The schools taught their children in English. That is why my family assimilated so well. Anyone racist enough to keep immigrants isolated by teaching them in a language other than English is unforgivably cruel. If I moved to Germany, China, or Somalia, I would speak their language, and those who come here should have the same expectation.
