Microsoft releases Windows classic Solitaire on iPhone and Android (What was old is now new)

(It still has the bouncing-card victory animations from Windows 95!!)

Most people still have fond memories of spending hours playing Solitaire on their old Windows desktop computers.

The rise of mobile gaming combined with Microsoft's decision last year to charge users for the Windows 10 version led to the popular game falling out of fashion.

But the classic Solitaire is back, and it is available on iOS and Android. Microsoft has launched a new app called Solitaire Collection, which is free to download and contains classic card games such as Klondike, Spider and Freecell.

Microsoft has retained features of the classic game, including the shuffling sounds and characteristic jumping of the cards when a player wins.

The app, which works on tablets and mobile devices, features daily challenges in all games with four difficulty levels. It has Xbox Live integration to give more serious players access to multi-player games, competitions and rewards.

Those who already play Solitaire on a Windows device will be able to sync their accounts and build their score across multiple handsets and computers.

There is also a Premium Edition available for $1.99 (£1.60) a month that does not include adverts and has some added features. Microsoft said the upgraded version of the game will be free for the next month "to celebrate our worldwide launch".

The way I read this, it's only for the mobile platforms, so my guess is 'no'.

Nintendo made a mini-version of their old classic NES. All the games are preloaded and you just plug it in with your HDMI cable.

Only bad thing is, that the controllers aren't wireless and some of the good games are excluded.

Somebody with artistic skilz should hack together something with about 35 floppy disks, labeled "Solitaire disk 1 of 35" and so on...

I missed the old Solitaire when I upgraded from XP to Win 7.

I found it on the XP machine, moved the two files (sol.exe and cards.dll) to the Win 7 machine and have happily been playing ever sense.

Don’t know if these two files will work with Win 10.

When I finally updates to Win7 from XP, I hated the Win7 games GUIs. I managed to get some of the old XP games — solitaire, free cell, spider solitaire and hearts — to work on 7. I doubt they would work on later versions of Windows.

That I what I hate about Windows — it makes too many programs obsolute, and many of those programs do not have later versions.

If/when Win10 ever came out with a ‘classic’ GUI, I might try it again. Until then, I am staying with Win7.

I did recently buy a Linux laptop, but Linux does not make anything easy. Even many of the tutorials for it are as bad as the product, itself — it is still in the realm of hobbyists. I found dozens of youtube videos that show how to install various versions of Linux, but few that actually show how to use some of the Linux programs.

Sorry. Left out the file sizes: .dll is 352KB, .exe is 56KB.

144 megabytes for iPad Pro. My first PC had only 150 megabytes of hard drive space. Enough for MS-DOS 6, Windows 3.1 (including Solitaire and Minesweeper), AND still plenty of room left for MS Word, Flight Simulator, Doom and Doom II, and whatever I downloaded with my 14.4 baud modem.

There’s a Solitaire suite on W10 that you can find by putting solitaire in the search bar.
