Secretary of State is becoming a political plum -- a prize for leading politicians.

I guess it has been like that in the past at certain times, but no president is going to pick an obscure academic like Dean Rusk for State now.

That may not be a bad thing, when you consider the Rusk years.

A very recent development, mainly under Obama. They have rarely been politicians.

Reagan had Haig and Schultz. Bush 41 had Baker and Eagleburger. Clinton had Christopher and Albright. Bush 43 had Powell and Rice.

Obama had Clinton and Kerry--two politicians.
