WASHINGTON (AP) -- Emboldened Republicans claimed a mandate Wednesday for President-elect Donald Trump after his astonishing election triumph, and an emotional Hillary Clinton told crestfallen supporters the GOP victor deserved a "chance to lead." President Barack Obama pledged a smooth transition of power.
"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country," the president said of the president-elect, the man who spent years questioning Obama's birthplace and challenging the legitimacy of his presidency. Obama, who had declared Trump unfit for the presidency, invited him to the White House Thursday.
Trump was uncharacteristically quiet in the aftermath of his triumph and made no public appearances Wednesday. He huddled with jubilant, sleep-deprived advisers at his eponymous skyscraper in Manhattan, beginning the daunting task of setting up an administration that will take power in just over two months. He also met with Vice President-elect Mike Pence and took calls from supporters, family and friends, according to spokeswoman Hope Hicks.

Mr. Trump most definitely has a mandate. Congress DOES NOT, most of them flew in on Mr. Trump’s coat tails.
He said precisely what he was going to do at pretty much every campaign appearance. No one can claim that he made any secret of his plans or agenda.
Still, Clinton was gracious in defeat, declaring that “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”
Isn’t it ironic that Hillary’s phone call to Donald Trump conceding the election was made around 3 AM?
It is interesting to contemplate what could have been without the oppression and manipulation of the electorate this cycle. Would Trump have captured the primary without the media building up his candidacy during those early crucial moments while simultaneously tearing down the moderates that at the least would have been more acceptable to many? Would Sanders have taken off if he was given a fair shake? Could a Bush or Rubio have won, to go on against a Sanders who favored very well with the same people that ultimately gave Trump the win in the Rust Belt? Questions.
It is interesting to think that we may owe the DNC and cohorts our Trump victory, our American victory.
Mandate? For months I’ve heard nothing but Trump landslide and fell for every word of it. Everybody’s talking 60-40, 40 states, etc. What a crock of s**t. I’m very happy he won, but the numbers are disappointing. To think that 50% of the electorate still voted for the biggest crminal to set foot on the American political landscape is disgraceful.
And Ryan is singing Donald’s praises.
The Clinton’s are on a cliff edge of freedom or prison.
It’s no surprise to see these types of chameleons change colors when they know they could end up as food on the table.
You say “chameleons”.
I say greasy opportunistic doosh bags who serve only themselves and their highest bidder.
We’ve seen their true colors, now let them be excised from the public sphere.
All this kissing up by RATS and RINOS is nauseating.
Huff’npuffpost prognosticates:
“Millions of people lose health insurance.
Undocumented workers face new threats of deportation.
Progress on reducing greenhouse gases starts to reverse.
Conservatives regain a majority in the Supreme Court, and are poised to expand their influence.
Deficits rise, forcing cuts to programs on which the poor and middle class depend.
Those are some of the headlines you could see over the next four years, now that Donald Trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States.”
