But, setting all that aside: the employee had no right to conduct what amounts to an illegal search.
The woman should have said: call a police officer, and if you can convince him I'm a shoplifter, I'll consent to HIS search.

He obviously hadn’t seen her five minutes ago, just saw a woman with a large belly and assumed from the looks of her that she might be stealing, so he tried to trip her up with that line, hoping she would confess.
It’s the same tactic cops use when they have no evidence but they tell a suspect “well, we know you did it, because we have tons of evidence against you”.
