His bronchitis is acting up. You wont know it come kickoff 34 hours from now at Tiger Stadium because that voice is going to deliver as it has for six decades. But on Friday morning over eggs and bacon at his hotel in Baton Rouge, Verne Lundquist is feeling it in his lungs. The CBS broadcaster was a three-packs-a-day Marlboro man from 1956 to 92 before a doctor told him he had to quit. Hardest thing hes ever had to do, Lundquist will tell you. Acupuncture and hypnosis failed but the nicotine gum finally stuck. Of course you can never really escape your past, so the cough stays.

Go Blue.
Keith Jackson
Brent Musberger, the inspiration of multiple drinking games for his predictable patter???? That Uncle Brent??? Many liver doctors are glad and as many liquor stores are sad that he was finally sent to the showers.
My dad died of complications due to COPD. I hope that doesn’t happen to Verne.
<p.
Hated seeing my dad in that condition.
PLEASE take Danielson with you!
Whoa Nelly!
I grew up with Vern calling Dallas Cowboys games on the radio. Another great voice heading into the sunset. Thanks for the memories Vern!
Bert Mufburger here. lol
Morleys for the Cigarette Smoking Man.
Totally. They're both Bama haters. They actively root against Bama when calling games. I hear Tebow is pretty good at calling football games.
A truly good guy.
Still remember him doing “Bowling for Dollars” after 6pm news on Channel 8 WFAA.
Ahh! Those were the days! LOL

I hate losing the great voices of the game like Lundquist, Pat Summerall, Keith Jackson, etc. It’s missing with the younger announcers.
I can hear Keith Jackson now....”He’s a 6’2” running back out of north west Louisiana, and he brings a load when he hits ya.”
Yep! And doing “Bowling for Dollars” and years as the head sportscaster on Ch. 8 in Dallas. My two favorite Vern/Cowboys moments were one when he was so nervous in the closing minutes of a Cowboys comeback he lit the wrong end of a cigarette in the booth and Brad Sham went crazy on the air. The other when when Cowboy placekicker Danny Villaneuva whiffed the football on a kickoff. I thought he was going to loose his mind. Ah the sunny slopes of long ago!
