One of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards shows will soon have a Chinese owner.

Under a deal announced Friday, Dalian Wanda Group will buy Santa Monica-based Dick Clark Productions for about $1 billion, giving it broadcasting rights to the Golden Globe Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards and the New Year’s Eve countdown in New York.

The acquisition is the latest effort by Dalian Wanda to expand its entertainment footprint after the firm bought the AMC Entertainment theater chain for $2.6 billion in 2012 and took over Legendary Entertainment this year in a deal valued at $3.5 billion dollars.

Well, if they stop giving awards to “bro” country music, it will be a good thing.

Just like the Japanese 25 years ago, Chinese elites have access to too much funny money, and no doubt will grossly overpay for anything they can park their money in

Wow! Dick Clark is doing 20k rpms in his grave. My bona fides to say so: I was partners with Dick Clark and Paul Revere in the American Bandstand Niteclub in Reno back in the mid/late 90's. I don't have a graphics client so can't post proof here. If you want same, Freepmail me.

Didn't know Dick that well, but believed him to be a Patriot, although distant when not on camera. I know damn well that Paul was a Patriot. This sucks. I'll never be able to look at my Bandstand memorabilia and photos again without some dismay. Yeah, I understand companies do what's best for the shareholders, but China? Really?

I quit caring about country music in the mid 80s or so.

The modern era stuff I can live without it

Trying to envision what Chinese country looks and sounds like.

There is this guy, but I don't remember him singing on the show...

With the exception of Chris Stapleton, I stopped listening to “country” music. Sad...it used to be my go-to.

"I quit caring about country music in the mid 80s or so."

Nothing beats early Waylon and Willie and earlier with Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells. However, I really liked the early/mid 90's with Brooks&Dunn, Dwight Yokum, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Hank Williams Jr., some Garth, et al. They added a rock flavor to country.

Can't stand the cross-over country artists now. Except for the occasional track, they don't sound country - they are pop. However, did like early Shania Twain - who didn't? Sorry, never liked Merle Haggard or Hank Williams Sr. era. Don't go that far back. Still, I can listen to Waylon Jennings all day long and still do on occasion. Of course, he was a little later, but the same basic country feel.

The best country song with rock influence: Dwight Yokum’s “Fast As You”. The entire album was a breakthrough in country music. Saw the guy twice in concert and I rarely go to concerts. He was just beyond cool.
