Report: Minneapolis Band Sues Bruno Mars Over ‘Uptown Funk’
CBS Minnesota ^

Posted on 11/04/2016 12:24:35 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A Minneapolis band is reportedly suing Bruno Mars and many others, claiming that the mega-hit “Uptown Funk” ripped off their jam from 1983.

Mars and “Uptown Funk” producer Mark Ronson are among the named listed in the lawsuit from the Minneapolis Sound-era band College, TMZ reports.

While College has one surviving member, he is demanding a slice of the enormous profits generated by “Uptown Funk” for himself an the estates of the bands other members.

Mars’ 2014 smash broke records atop the Billboard singles chart, and the YouTube video has garnered nearly 2 billion views to date.

College is saying that “Uptown Funk” is similar in rhythm, structure and melody to the band’s song “Young Girls.”

You be the judge.

Had newfound respect for Bruno after seeing him play the drums at halftime during SB.

I used to play, and he is GOOD.

I have no newfound respect for you, however.

Actually, the chart says you’re down 2 points.

That’s okay, I have a huge lead, and a powerful firewall.

It doesnt sound anything like it.

“..claiming that the mega-hit “Uptown Funk” ripped off their jam from 1983. “

Maybe because his style is a homage to funk music from the late 70s and early 80s, and it’s more than likely that something sound similar to it.

“Uptown Funk” is all generic riffs and beats with some new lyrics. Mars just does it eerily convincingly to the point where it’s hard to tell the difference between the old and new stuff. It was the same with the Neo-Swing bands in the late 90s.

Listing to this older song, it sounds like most similar tracks from back then. Nothing unique.

Collage stole that sound from Prince obviously, but that is more a sound of that time then only their song.

At the age of two, he was nicknamed "Bruno" by his father, because of his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.

Talk about a blast from the past !

I though Prince was pushing that later than 1983. It kind of reminds me of that song Walk the Dinosaur by Was Not Was.

I'm not convinced it infringes on , but they preemptively gave credit to The Gap Band after it was released. The song already had eight songwriters, plus three from The Gap Band.

I pre judged him in my head and was happily proven wrong.

You need to play A LOT of years to be that good on drums. And I like some of his songs.

At least it’s not rap filth.

Though the 80s glam bands had some filthy songs of their own, but NEVER at the level of rap.
