Keeping up with the modern times and embracing the ever-growing movement of feminism, Duke University announced it will be launching a new initiative targeted specifically at men feminists.
Crafter together with the university’s Women’s Center, the Duke Men’s Project is a nine-week long storytelling program that aims to “create a space of brotherhood fellowship dedicated to interrogating male privilege and patriarchy.”
Talking to Broadly about their new voluntary program, Duke’s executive director of news and communication, Keith Lawrence, explained:
“Men who sign up for this program can explore concepts of masculinity and how those concepts influence the world around them.
The program is similar to ones on many college campuses that offer opportunities for students to explore issues related to masculinity.”
Aiming to deconstruct toxic masculinity According to Duke Chronicle op-ed, the Duke Men’s Project will encourage participants to “critique and analyze their own toxic masculinities” in order to create a healthier outlook.
Toxic masculinity is often described the “socially-constructed attitude” that sees the masculine gender as violent, aggressive, seeking control. The manifestations of toxic masculinity include rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence against women, gun violence, etc.
Per Broadly’s interview with a masculinity scholar and sociology professor Tristan Bridges, “while women do suffer from the results of so-called toxic masculinity, the victims who often go unnoticed are men themselves.”
