NEW BRITIAN, Conn. (WTNH) Superintendent of New Britain schools Nancy Sarra has issued a statement Tuesday morning regarding the hooded sweatshirts rule.
Sarra says in an effort to standardize practices that all administrators decided their goal was to teach students how to dress for success during the school day. They agreed that there is a time and place for hooded sweatshirts, but they should not be worn during classroom instruction time.
This is about preparing our students to be career ready and recognizing that in many cases, hooded sweatshirts arent a part of the attire adults wear to work. We want to help our students dress for the part of success in their future careers. Of course, there are always exceptions to this with various careers, but overall, hooded sweatshirts are not attire typically worn to work.
The definition of the word ban is to officially or legally prohibit. When that language is used to describe our position on hooded sweatshirts, it is misleading. We understand that students wear hooded sweatshirts while at recess, dress down days and other events. We also understand that students wear hooded sweatshirts to school so they can stay warm.
However, when classroom instruction begins, they are not to be worn. With that said, we recognize that at times, students are cold and require another layer of clothing. This is why we allow students to wear long sleeve shirts under their uniforms if needed.
Another reason Sarra says hooded sweatshirts are an obstacle is because all of New Britains PK-8 students wear name tags that should be visible as part of their everyday uniform.
Using sensational words such as banned evokes anger and excitement. It is not a we vs. they environment here in New Britain. It is about each student getting better to be the best they can possibly be.
The rule applies to all schools in the district.
I’m all in favor of school uniforms.
Discrimination lawsuit in three, two . . .

Or at least have dress rules. In my day it was no blue jeans (except for in farm country) and girls had to wear skirts/dresses - on really cold days the girls could wear pants underneath their skirt/dress, but had to remove them when them once inside the school (the long pants, that is, not the dresses!).
But hoodies are a “dress for success” item of clothing for wannabe criminals. They help to break up the sihlouette of a person and make it difficult to recognize an individual in a police lineup.
Hooded sweatshirts are no dif than hooded coats etc. They are outer wear.
All outer wear needs to be in the locker before class.Period.
Any one that sees this differently is a frigen idiot.
Im all in favor of school uniforms.

Exactly. Fifteen years ago our school district banned hoodies in part because they couldn’t identify perpetrators on the security tapes.
head down, earphones in ears, music on, hoodie covers all. I applaud the dress code ruling.
If it’s warmer that 40 degrees the primary function is to hide you identity from security cameras.
THAN 40 degrees...YOUR identity...
Must need coffee.
