Qymana Botts saw white colleagues with the same amount of experience getting promoted to cashier ahead of her at the Indiana discount store where she worked. When she asked her supervisors why, they told her she didn’t project the image that they wanted from their cashiers: straight hair — not her natural Afro — and more makeup. […]

Almost half of young African-Americans say they’ve experienced racial discrimination while looking for a job and while on the job, and one-third of young women of all races and ethnicities say they’ve faced employment-related gender discrimination.

This information comes from a GenForward survey of young adults conducted by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The first-of-its-kind poll pays special attention to the voices of young adults of color, highlighting how race and ethnicity shape the opinions of the country’s most diverse generation. …

Reading between the lines, GenBackward has found that retailers do not want their employees to have a slovenly appearance and to be proud of good grooming.

I don’t believe this.

When I was in the unemployment office I overheard two male black teenagers discussing their problems finding work. According to them they had tried everything. They were clean, articulate and were wearing put-together outfits. Unfortunately the outfits were jeans they had to hold up with one hand. They both had, I’ll call it odd, haircuts with a comb stuck in their hair. They looked like they had coordinated their dress, but what I think the problem is, they are dressed in high-black-thug fashion. They obviously weren’t thugs, at least not at that moment. But they had the thug, street look down perfectly. It’s almost a black teenager’s uniform.

They had no idea how a prospective employer would see them. They might as well have only one arm as the other holds up their pants. The look would intimidate most white customers because whites associate that look with being robbed or beaten.

I was in a McDonalds with what appeared to be an all black staff. They wear uniforms and the uniforms look pretty good. The black female manager scolded a young black man coming in for work, saying, “Pull your fuckin’ pants up. This ain’t the ghetto.”

Speaking properly, being able to handle costumers of all kinds, staying off the phone, no "discounts" to certain customers, being able to write, no flirting with the customers, being on time, staying late especially on Fridays, working some weekends, not running home to take care of your three children from 3 different daddies...

As Bob Dylan said to the aspiring singer/songwriter who complained that nobody wanted to give him a gig, “Maybe there’s a reason for that.”

blacks should open their own businesses and see who they would hire. How come all these illegals dirtbags poring into the country can open businesses but still not too many blacks bother.

Yep. I’m with you...even the most bone-headed supervisor wouldn’t say that, and there are a lot of bone-headed supervisors.

Let’s see...black, person...Check. Female...Check. Unusual ethnic hair style...Check. Exudes defensiveness...Check.

Yeah. Exactly the type of person who I would want to hire (not) and if not hire them, tell them the reason for not hiring them was their hair style.

Might as well set your watch for a call from a government agency or lawyer in 3...2...1...

I was at a sports store yesterday and noticed that there were a large number of black workers hovering nearby. Some were cashiers. One was a manager. Some were standing around. I didn’t count the number of whites. But they were outnumbered. What drew my attention to the black workers? Expensive, heavy, hot hair. Those folks had invested a lot of money in their hair and hair accessories.

We ate at a pizza joint a week ago, and the workers were mostly black. I recall one white male employee. The restaurant was out of a number of toppings an hour before closing time. The workers messed up the order in front of us and our order. It was all due to communication problems. The workers who made the mistakes were visibly annoyed that they had done something incorrectly. I don’t trust people who show such irritation. We decided to not return to that particular establishment again. We have visited a sister restaurant across town. The workers were mostly black. We had excellent food and service there.

Yes I agree it sounds contrived. Especially considering that their words could be used against them in a suit.

Or retailers wanted people who would show up, on time, with good attitudes.
When I was managing that is all I really needed.

Ask them if they will sell to anyone who comes in, including the police or those associated with law enforcement?
Ask them how they would handle a hard to please customer who called them the ‘N’ word? Could they keep their composure and not take it personally?

Here’s an actual ‘racial awareness exercise’ that will work most times:

Get a young liberal to work at a convenience store nights and weekends for an entire summer and keep track of shoplifting, gas drive-offs, and generally rude incidents noting the ethnic background or race of the perpetrators.

The young liberal may deny, lie or make excuses, but s/he will KNOW what the problem is.

I’ve seen a lot of black clerks in stores with Afros but otherwise neat appearance. It shouldn’t bother anyone. However, I very seldom see white clerks with flamboyant dyed hair (hot pink, blue, etc.) but I do see a lot of them on the street. For what it’s worth, if a vermillion haired clerk was helpful I’d have no complaint.

I think this is a nonsense complaint and the girl was making a racial excuse for what was actually the consequence of poor work.

There are still a good number of bigots my age (my wife has had a few bad experiences over the years) however I never come across true bigotry in the under 40 group of whites. Black youths, well that’s another case entirely.

One of the businesses here hired a very upstanding gentleman who is a straight shooter in every respect, and he happens to be black. Competent and effective, the man is an HR director's jackpot in this day and age. He isn't a saint, but he is very personable, and held in good esteem by nearly everyone who interacts with him, with a particular exception: blacks who think he is acting too white. Hell hath no fury like "brothers" and "sisters" when a man like this tells them that thug behavior and dress is unacceptable.

A good friend of mine - who had seen much more of the world than I - once told me that the hardest job in America was being a black male who tried to raise a family and get ahead while playing by the rules... and the biggest difficulty he had was not due to whitey.

This is like saying the dam has a hole in it and interviewing the water as to why the dam has a hole.

Discrimination works both ways. Take for example government agencies known to hire minorities. Why? Because the hiring authorities will hire more of their own race. In restaurants, in corporations, when the hiring authority is predominantly of one particular race they are more prone to hire that race. Technically this is discriminatory hiring practice but in reality there is no way around it. Only when the majority race is forced to hire certain quotas that this does not become about who is the right fit for the position but who has the right skin color for forced regulatory policies so we don’t get sued out of existence. A predominantly all black employees would not think twice about getting sued for not hiring white workers where if this were vice versa the same could not be said. The issue becomes does a business’s hiring practice have to reflect the population and over compensate for its minority population or does business sense prevail and hire those who will best represent the company in customer facing roles. Right now the former is winning over the latter except when those that do the hiring is of the minority. Is this discriminatory? Some will say yes, as it alludes to reverse discrimination. Some will say no because the other side is discriminating based on color of skin.

In reality, its the dollar that discriminates unmercilessly, as a person no matter how well they do or do not present themselves or the make up of the color of their skin, when in a customer facing role will bring in more or less money for that particular business. This has been shown by the interactions customers have with these individuals and the feedback left by customers. A person no matter the color of their skin dresses and behaves in a manner suited for that business has always received good reviews. For example if one were to walk into a tattoo parlor and the tatoo artist was dressed in a suit and tie, people would stop going. Why they are not dressed appropriate to the nature of the business. IF someone were to walk into a bank and the individual had his underwear showing and pants lower than his hips, the customer’s perception would be the bank isn’t trustworthy. Dress and behavior are part of the business culture. Act and dress differently than the culture of that business and you are a pariah. This is what people perceive to be discriminatory when in reality it is not. Surveying the individuals as to whether or not they were discriminated against is asking the water why the dam has a hole in it. Unless the survey took in so many other factors like dress, grammar usage etc.
