AUSTIN - The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division says it found numerous violations in Austin’s restaurant industry, in that owners violated federal labor law by not paying workers the wages they were legally owed.

The Labor Department said the division found violations in 95 percent of its investigations of Austin-area restaurants between Oct. 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. The percentage of violations found was down from 98 percent in fiscal year 2015.

“The current level of noncompliance found in these investigations is not acceptable,” said Dr. David Weil, administrator of the Wage and Hour Division in a release. “WHD will continue to use every tool we have available to combat this issue. This includes vigorous enforcement as well as outreach to employer associations and worker advocates to ensure that Austin restaurant workers receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.”

In the nine-month period ending in June, Labor said investigators helped recover more than $330,000 in back wages for 500 Austin restaurant workers.

Typical, typical leftists. Pass a law because it makes them feel good about themselves. Then immediately set about getting out from under the effects of their own stupidity when they find out it hurts.

I lived in Austin from 1992 to 2000. Crazy liberal except for the suburbs. Great restaurant town but I can safely guess that a huge majority of these owners are libs. The hypocrisy is astounding. Have they checked San Francisco wage disparities yet? Ithaca? Madison? Burlington?

U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division which is Federal probably would find
this across most locals in the US. Wages in this industry is one of the hardest to document
because of unreported tips, etc.

One of those joints was on the Bar Rescue show - the owner was a creepy nut, if I recall correctly was originally from Oregon, Washington state or someplace, kept babbling about "corporate" this, "corporate" that, "corporate greed", while he himself was working his staff in slavery. He couldn't see the irony.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if it was Mexican places?

I’d be willing to bet a majority of the employees getting screwed were illegal aliens. Restaurants like illegal alien employees because they are very compliant and don’t complain.
