The boy's mother said he was having a bad day and has been expressing himself like this lately.

It sounds like he is too young to be in school: he should be at home playing with toys. Our society institutionalizes children way too young.

Some children just mature later than others.
My middle son was lucky that he had a teacher who was sensitive to our divorced state.
By the time he left her class - after 1-1/2 years with her,
he was well on his way to just being a normal boy.
Parents are to busy trying to compare their children
to every other child; demanding they behave in ways
way beyond their emotional skill level.
