He was with them 1997-2000. Then he was put on waivers and the Red Sox claimed him. His career essentially had collapsed. Suddenly, he was “Big Papi”!

Ortiz was drafted by the Mariners and spent several uneventful minor league seasons before being traded to the Minnesota Twins as part of a deal for the Mariners getting Dave Hollins.

Ortiz showed plenty of power with the Twins, but had trouble staying healthy and couldn’t play defense. The Twins organization has always taken a dim view of PEDs, and rumors plagued Ortiz so they let him go.

Position players Matthew Lecroy and Justin Morneau replaced Ortiz’ DH at-bats.
