There Are Some Insane 'Pokémon Go' Conspiracies Going Around

It's a surveillance and intelligence-gathering tool for the CIA and/or Google

Pokémon Go accesses an aggressive amount of your personal info. Several redditors and James Corbett, of the decidedly fringe site The Corbett Report, believe that Niantic -- the game's developer -- is just acting as a puppet for Google, which owned the company until last year. The theory is that they're helping Google build a database of maps of the interiors of peoples' homes, buildings, or other private spaces that Google Van and the company's mapping teams don't have access to, by simply tapping into players' cameras.

The other argument is that they're collecting all this info (and tapping your camera) for the CIA. The truthers trace this all back to Niantic Lab's founder and CEO, John Hanke. Before Niantic, Hanke started Keyhole, Inc -- a software company whose groundbreaking mapping platform eventually became Google Earth -- with help from the CIA's own venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel. Just some food for thought as you chase that Snorlax around your apartment.

Speaking at the recent Center for Strategic and International Studies conference on Wednesday, Comey likened covering your cam to locking your car and the door to your home.

Zucko be covering his CAM. Hackers who can find a way in to your computer can use their access to install malicious RAT (Remote Access Trojan) software that gives them unfettered access to what you type on the keyboard, say near the microphone or do in front of the camera.

Needs an edit:

'Bill Gates who can find a way in to your computer by getting you to install Win10 can use their access to install malicious RAT (built into the operating system) software that gives them unfettered access to what you type on the keyboard.'

In trying to stay in the spirit of your post, recently a hotel GM friend of mine told me some random guy walked into their kitchen, when asked what he was doing, he said playing that game. When they asked him to leave he was indignant and could not believe that they wouldn’t allow him to just go wherever.........In the immortal words of William Shatner on Saturday night live:

“PEOPLE, GET A LIFE!”.

Can’t get a legit warrant for the guy on the hill who insists on paying cash for gas? Just plop one of those Pokemon things there and intercept the video of the 12-year-olds who show up. Done and done.

I think it’s pure marketing.

Get enough Millenials hooked on playing the game, then start hitting up small businesses for placement. Hey, local pizza joint, would you like us to put a Pokémon inside your establishment? We can generate a heckuva lot of foot traffic for you.

The bloatware is clunky and slow enough to be a government written program, I’ll grant you that.
