It is very smart for politicians to not only hug babies but also dogs and cats too since so many Americans have pets too.
The U.S. mass media is something very different. They have singled both their extreme bias & their gullibility. Playing on that bias & gullibility is the virtual textbook method of handling such. Trump is certainly to be commended for understanding how that game is played. Reagan was also quite good at drawing the media into situations, where their bias helped him to project the image he wanted, rather than the image they wanted to project onto him.
