I’m sure Uncle Sam would be more than happy to store that data for you, Chief.

Plenty of storage in Utah, better use for it as well.

Making something a system of record adds whole new levels of regulation, policy, and bureaucracy.

This is still a very interesting position to take since many use of force situations end up in civil court and one avoided court case would easily pay for this kind of storage.

= = = = = = = = = = = =
Again, what happens when ‘know nothings’ are in charge.

Far to many cops have said that while a DUI subject is being arraigned etc the best thing to do is show him the dash camera of the ‘arrest’ AND, just like in the movies his lawyer would say ‘Just shut up John’..now Officer can we deal?

Same as the biggest hang up with red light & speed cameras is if EVERYONE starts obeying the law.

They will come down almost instantaneously as no one can afford to run all that equipment without all that revenue coming in.

‘They’ claim it is a safety issue, WE know it is monetary. If it were safety alone, you would get minus 10 points for running the light or speeding THEN a minimum of 5 years for driving without a license.

THAT gets peoples attention.....

That installation is exactly what I was thinking of when I made my comment. Thanks for posting the picture.

Glad to oblige.
Now, when I hear “Utah”, I don’t even think “Mormons”; I think NSA.

Seems to me they don’t want to be held accountable and maybe there are larger issues within that department...

I’m familiar with the fight against police body cams. It comes from the police unions.

The cameras are cheap, the data storage cost is budget breaking.

Think of a busy urban police department where the cameras would be on six hours each, times say, 30 officers. Then depending on policy, and what the SJWs demand, you may have to store that for at least two years. I don’t even want to try to do the math...

Cameras are great, and truth be told most officers want them because they work and false complaints like nobodies business, but the bean counters just can’t get behind them in many places.

I know what it cost. I’m in IT and I don’t, personally, think it is budget breaking.

The TCO is reduced by eliminating bogus complaints and they have one more piece of evidence to prosecute probable cause, provide another part of evidence and chain of events.

You may be right the bean counters just can’t count.

Ok, I will defer to your technical expertise on the storage.

However, I am privy to police department budgets and when I say there is very little room for cameras, I speak from experience and first hand knowledge.

When you are struggling to attract quality applicants in the wake of Ferguson, and your Democrat City Council has no stomach for raising taxes, and you can’t give your officers a raise to keep them from leaving for greener pastures, things like cameras become a far, far secondary expense.

I work for an agency where our comptroller failed to allocate money towards a project that had been contracted out. His mismanagement of funds led to a loss of close to $700k in funds on a $3 mil contract. After being raked over the coals (but not fired) he has now cancelled that contract with the services contractor and is trying to bid a new contract which will cost even more money. Basically trying to trump up some allegations of malfeasance to cover for his mismanagement. Can’t get rid of him, though, because he is an SES.

Body cameras solve several issues. First they protect officers from frivolous complaints. Second, they allow the police to stop the "hands up, don't shoot" lies. Third, they either catch bad cops or deter bad cops from being bad. Last they allow training personnel to review events and conduct training to improve performance. This last piece will take a while for police to take advantage of.

One thing that the average citizenry won't understand is that you can't simply set up a big drive and call it storage. As a "system of record" that storage must be set up in a way so that the chain of custody is preserved and data is kept in its original state. Additionally departments with such storage are very concerned about what it will cost to answer request for that data, and how they will manage those activities.

I get what you are saying but, those costs are offset by reduction in or controlling of insurance rates for claims against LEO, on the job actions, etc.

Then there is the reduction in cost for prosecution with additional evidence.

I wanted to work for a company last year that makes cameras for body and vehicles and the TCO touchpoints are just too compelling.

It would have been an easy sell.

Back to posting meme’s and smart alec comments about Shrillery and other things I can’t stand....

data storage is a pork project since the data will have to be stored forever. Meaning some crony will have government money cash cows. AND the fed can demand turnover to give the contract to a favored crony capitalist.
