Here children must be blind ...

I know my eyes hurt a little...

I don't see the problem here. If law isn't founded on morality, you can't make moral objections to what people do.

Buggery used to be a felony that would get you sent to prison or a crazy house. Now it's protected by law.

Years ago, I read in some magazine that Katherine Hepburn
was once told by Spencer Tracy about lesbian affairs. She
refused to believe him because it wasn’t a physical
possibility as they did not have any natural equipment to
have real sex. (Tracy or some other actor she acted with in
a movie.)

That’s one way to collect a mother’s social security benefits.

This reminds of the good old days when gay guys ‘adopted’ their boyfriends - no matter how old and decrepit.

I have thought about this from the day the SCotUS forced queer marriage down our collective throats. If marriage is no longer about the procreation of children- obviously a procreating couple requires at a bare minimum a man and a woman- then consanguinity laws no longer apply. Consanguinity laws assume that the partners will conceive children together, but if marriage no longer implies procreation then it doesn’t matter is the partners are related and limitations on marriage between near family members is discriminatory.

What they failed to consider in upending the definition of marriage is that a large chunk of our laws rested on marriage being between a man and a woman who are likely to conceive children. Consanguinity laws are part of that as well as inheritance laws. The first scenario I imagined is the business owner who wants their child to inherit the family business. Rather than have inheritance taxes blow a hole through the family fortune, the parent “marries” the child and the estate can be passed down tax free on the death of the parent/spouse. Because marital relationships no longer rest on procreative activities between the partners (otherwise how can two people of the same sex marry when it is simply impossible to procreate?) then the state should have no concern about family members procreating. Certainly hard to argue that a parent doesn’t love a child that they want to give everything they own to.

I think Hepburn was a little more savvy than that - after all, Margaret Sullivan outright accused her of lesbianism back in the 30s because of her over-reliance on the women who always lived with her. Her famous ‘companions.’

I don’t know if Hepburn was gay or bisexual. She certainly loved Tracy and other men. But those rumors were always rife.

Wouldn't it be wild if Tracy was Hepburn's fake beard, and that's why he stayed with his wife, because nothing was actually going on with Hepburn?

It would be wild but I don’t think so.

Being a fierce fan of their movies, I couldn’t doubt the intense love between them in their films - particularly State of the Union and their last film together. In a doc about Tracy, Hepburn did admit that Tracy thought she was a lesbian when they first met! Those rumors were out there. But obviously whatever her leanings, she loved Tracy to the point where she would sleep outside his hotel rooms when he went on his benders. She wanted to make sure he had someone to take care of him when he finally emerged.

Quite a lady!

And quite a man.

I’m a fan too. Tracy and Bogart both had yachts and would sail off LA together to relax. But when storms arose, Bogart would head in, while Tracy would head out straight into the storm. Bogart called him a “wild man.”

Bogart, despite his image, loathed being on location preferring the studio. He was a New York stage actor and basically never left that world.

He gave one of his greatest performances in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and loathed every moment of it. Huston must have been quite persuasive to get him into Darkest Africa for The African Queen.

He said he and Huston drank whiskey constantly all the way through the making of the African Queen, and that they were the only ones on the set who didn’t get dysentery.
