Yea, but the weren’t all done on the same day.
“All sites are safer than Chicago.”
Very true!
Been to this site many times. Still generates earthquakes in the 1-2 range.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki aren’t among the seven, even though they were the 2nd and 3rd nuclear explosions. Still tests in my book, albeit on real targets.
Detroit didn’t make the list???
We haven’t nuked it yet. It’ll still be a while before Hamtramck gets bad enough, and we have a government with some spine.
It uses Google Earth maps to pinpoint where you want your nuke to go off. You can choose from the micro nukes up to Tsar Bomba. Airburst or Ground burst....you can see radiation and the >5psi blast radius. Good stuff.
Try a search using LLNL drill-back operations or gas sampling. Livermore sampled cavern gas very quickly after the cavern was created, in an attempt to more accurately estimate the yield of the event. FYI, I have not tried this search.
The Soviets used nukes to make canals, rivers, etc., under the PNE program. Same issues, but not likely OSHA approved. :-)
Great photo. thanks.
I would rather scuba dive Bikini than walk down the street in Detroit!
It’s probably a LOT safer!
Those suits don’t protect you against radiation, they just protect you against bringing radioactive particles home with you.
Valid point! But even then, the biggest nukes pale in comparison to large volcanic eruptions. For instance, if Yellowstone Park has an event, goodbye to most of the USA, from one eruption.
I remember as a kid, doing duck and cover drills in school. Our school was about 1-1/2 miles from ground zero in San Francisco. Later on, moving down the peninsula I thought there was a reasonable chance of surviving as the hills would provide some protection. Until I found out the Soviets had dozens of nukes targeted on our area. They would take out the entire SF Bay Area with overlapping nuclear blasts.
So yeah, if thousands are done on the same day the weather forecast will be cloudy (and warm).
Yes, tests. Additionally, they were warning shots to the Soviets, more a deterrent to them not to move on Japan than a deterrent to the Japanese. Soviet forces were arrayed in Korea planning to invade Japan later on the day the Hiroshima bomb was used.
