I have long believed that bored newspaper people did stuff like this on purpose.
Years ago the old Pittsburgh Press ran a story about some Greenpeace sailors who were protesting Soviet whaling. They went over and staged a protest off the Russian Arctic Coast.
Of course the Soviets were not amused and they got detained. The State Department negotiated their release, and deputized the Mayor of Nome, Alaska to take some boats over and go pick them up.
The headline on the story about this deal read:
Release of Seamen Expected
Every year two local teams matched up, Seaman high school and another with the mascot of Trojans resulting in classic sports page headlines.
My favorite was, if I recall correctly, Seaman expected to break through Trojans.
