Germany accuses Fiat of car emissions cheating

The German government has accused Fiat-Chrysler of building emissions cheating technology into some vehicles...

Affected vehicles deactivated their storage catalytic converters and exhaust recuperation systems after six test cycles or a 22-minute delay -- two minutes longer than the standard length of an emissions test -- resulting in NOx emissions "9 to 15 times higher than the legal limit", it said...

Under EU law, each manufacturer earns approval from its national regulator, allowing it to sell vehicles Europe-wide.

But critics say the system means that regulators can go easy on their own country's auto-makers.

Berlin has been under pressure from a German parliamentary inquiry set up in July, which is looking into whether the federal government could have turned a blind eye to excessive emissions.

Hard for them to complain about Fiat when VW has been proven to be doing this.

A good question!

IMO, the manufactures have an obligation, to produce the best engines, within price constraints. Legal and no more.

If the speed limit is 55, you do not drive 25, because it might be better. Than ZERO would be best.

Real auto industry guys know that EU mpg and pollution ratings have been a joke for years.

Fiat Chrysler headed by Marchionne is completely inept and needs to go away.

Ford (First On Race Day/Found On Road Dead) and FIAT (Fix It Again Tony) are not the same entity.

FIAT

After all the sexy advertising in the US, you do not see too many of the new Fiat on the road, do you?

I would expect nothing less from Fiat Chrysler.

Almost like “Catch Me If You Can” where the crook starts uncovering scams.

You’d think they discovered such cheating when new emissions measuring systems that could measure the actual emissions from a passing motor vehicle became widely available in 2008. Indeed, it was such a measurement system that alerted German regulators and the EPA about possible cheating by Volkswagen on their diesel-powered cars as far back as 2009.

Actually, where I am in Arkansas, there’s quite a number of those little 500 minicars they make, and even a few of the larger ones.

Of course, that said, northwest Arkansas has somehow become the Pontiac Aztek capital of the US as well, so make of that what you will.

Mazda was attempting to bring a diesel to the US but canned it because they couldn’t legitimately make emissions and have MPG similar to VW ... Their engine was probably cleaner than FCA or VW ... I really like the idea of a small turbodiesel in a light car it makes tremendous sense.

Mazda should sue on grounds that the cheaters made their legit entry unmarketable or something along those lines...
