I would love to get the following message to the Trump campaign. Perhaps by calling this an “Open Letter to Donald Trump,” he might hear of it. I would hope his campaign has already considered it.
Sir,
Please STOP talking about deporting the millions of illegals, except perhaps for the felons.
The United Sates doesn’t need to deport anyone.
If we take away the numerous rewards and entitlements that the illegals receive, they will self-deport. I don’t know the details of those rewards, but they presumably consist of items like welfare, food stamps, housing, medical care, education, tax credits, etc. Take them away all-at-once, or one-at-a-time. When the illegals perceive that things are not quite as rosy as they had hoped, they will go home.
If they wish to go through the already established legal process of becoming a US citizen, go for it.
Let’s wait and see what he accomplishes in Mexico today and shares tonight.

A good percentage of illegals have US citizen kids who are entitled to benefits. Cutting off the parents/parent would have limited effect.
By far the most effective way to get them to leave is if they can't get work, E-Verify will have the more impact on current and future illegal immigration than anything else. In fact all other reforms will fail with out it. Even the wall.
OR go in opposite direction—FIRST publish a map showing our country with 100 states incorporating former Mexico- all being allowed in, documented -finger prints- and extra payments to English speaking teachers, doctors,etc-no citizenship until mission accomplished.
Mexico may shut down their own border.

A number of us have been saying this for a long time. Real economists, those who learned their craft from Adam Smith and Von Mises et al have been saying this. Ike knew how to do it. Of course the wetbacks weren't getting welfare back then but he made a few very public roundups, sent one (1) shipload back to southern Mexico and a couple of buses. He cut off the rainbow so that it ended in the sky instead of the US. The migration reversed. The deportations were minimal but loud and clear.
The difference now, of course, is that we are giving them all tons of welfare and we are advertising that fact throughout Mexico and Central America.
Cut off all welfare, shut down all "sanctuary" cities," start arresting a few selected employing companies and individuals. The millions will reverse course. Not all, of course, the more enterprising and perceptive will find ways to stay but these are the ones who actually contribute and are not taking welfare.
I agree with you to stop the welfare and they self deport. I also suggest jail for employers. Then the illegal aliens will flee like they came in.
By making the term 'self-deportation' toxic in 2012, Romney's inability to defend his absolutely correct stance put Trump in the unenviable position of trying to defend his 'pivot' without using accurate language.
In other words, Trump is saying 'self-deportation' without actually saying it.
I think there are plenty of deportations that need to happen and a partial list off the top of my head, would include ALL who overstay visas, anybody coming out of jail that committed a crime, served their time that is not a legal citizen and any illegals law enforcement encounters while doing their normal duties... The criminals go to jail first and deported after...
BUT that said, I agree that self deportation will happen if we would just simply enforce our existing laws and make it a crime (maybe even federal crime) to employ any illegal... I believe it, because that is all it took here in Arizona and I watched the self deportation happen as a result of our law. Unfortunately, because they could, instead of going home, they self deported to cities all over the US including the many sanctuary cities. Then our law was overturned by the Supreme Court and we are right back where we were with many new illegals just staying here when they cross. I don’t even have a problem with those that are here having a pathway to citizenship as long as that pathway starts with them going back and getting in line behind the ones already waiting and doing it the right way.
Before wasting the time and money deporting ANYBODY, we need to actually secure our border with a combination of physical and electronic barriers, probably more boots on the ground too, but that too is worthless if your not going to change our current “rules of engagement” and stop them. I personally don’t care if an actual physical wall is built along the entire border as long as the border is secured.

There is an old military principle regarding fences, walls, and such. Those things are included in the term: “Obstacles,” and obstacles are intended to stop, or at least slow down, the advance of the enemy.
The principle: “An obstacle is NOT an obstacle unless it is covered by fire (i.e. guns).”
