Hundreds of streets are named after the founder of communism, but this conservative politician wants to give Marx the boot.
Some 550 streets, alleys and plazas in former communist East Germany bear the name of of the Communist Manifesto philosopher, according to Die Welt.
But the Economic Council of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) believes it’s about time the country moved away from its Cold War past, as Bild first reported.
“More than a quarter of a century after the political and economic bankruptcy of the GDR [East Germany], it is time to part ways with communism’s replacement of saints in the streets,” general secretary for the CDU economic council Wolfgang Steiger told The Local in a statement on Thursday.
“I do not understand why some places today still have main streets named after him.” …

I’m surprised that there aren’t more buildings and streets on college campuses named after him.
Changing the names of local streets is so much not Germany’s biggest priority right now. Is it? Who cares about street names while you are being invaded by a violent, primitive enemy?
They’ll all eventually be “Erdogan Street.”

Why are local street names a national political issue? Can’t each town make its own decisions on street names? If it really is a federal issue in Germany, that’s part of the problem.

There are still streets and squares named for Marshal Tito in Croatia, perhaps also in the other parts of former Yugoslavia.
