That sounds pretty bad. Today we have more capabilities. I read a few installments of a series of novels last year - can’t remember the author’s name. Anyhow, a couple of the malefactors were worked on such that certain mutilations left them: paralyzed; blind; deaf; IIRC, tongue cut out; and with permanent vertigo. The only sense remaining intact was smell. Helluva way to go through life.
