Only problem with that scenario is the police allegedly reviewed the metal detector tapes at the entrance of the Olympic village, and determined that Lochte had his wallet and watch.
If that is true (and I am skeptical), Lochte and friends made it back to the village with all their possessions that night. So no need to make up a story to cover for something embarrassing. But really - no reason to make up a story at all.

Sometimes a watch isn't worth stealing. I doubt that he was wearing a Rolex, or Breitling. When I have to travel internationally I leave my watch at home, and buy a POS digital Casio watch for $10 at Walmart for the trip.
