Agree, but the powers that be will use this as the excuse to have all future Olympics in 1st World countries for at least the next 30-50 years.
If...they can find a 1st World city stupid enough to host one.
I once saw a most rational solution to the politics, graft and payola that surrounds the selection of Olympic venues. The idea was this: since Greece was the origin of the Olympic concept, build an Olympic City in Greece and hold the games there each time. The standard venues for gymnastics, swimming, field sports etc would all be used over and over. Only the occasional rule change or addition of a new sport would create new construction. Athlete accommodations could be in the city as well. Extreme security measures would only have to manage a known area making that task very manageable.
It would reduce the crippling cost to a host country of building for an event that would never be used again. And it would help Greece a bit financially.
IMO a really good idea ...
Um no, because with the terrorist massacres going on, you can expect a massacre with a gun or a bomb to go off at future Olympic games as they happen in Europe or the U.S.A.
“the powers that be will use this as the excuse to have all future Olympics in 1st World countries for at least the next 30-50 years”
As “excuses” go, it’s really quite a good one.
Are there any first world countries left?
I have to agree. No one’s even mentioned the ‘72 Summer Games in Munich. Tragedy can strike the games in just about any country.
There was a year decades ago (1948?) when London held the games. They only used pre-existing facilities. (It was shortly after WWII and the games were just getting back on their feet, so it was far easier to to do that.)
Anyway, I would suggest that future games be held that way. The events have to be held at facilities already in existence. It might bring the games back to a more manageable level.
