BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox canceled a David Ortiz bobblehead promotion Tuesday night when the figurine turned out to be "racially insensitive," said team president Sam Kennedy.
The bobblehead depicts Ortiz addressing fans at Fenway Park following the Boston Marathon bombings, but Kennedy said it didn't much resemble the retiring slugger and was not fit for distribution.
Kennedy saw the final version of the bobblehead for the first time Tuesday afternoon after they were delivered.
"My two immediate reactions were first, it was a really inaccurate portrayal of what he looks like," Kennedy told The Associated Press. "My personal reaction was it was offensive and, to me, kind of appeared racially insensitive. I just had a bad reaction."
He then held a meeting with several team officials.
"My gut feeling was if I have that negative reaction then our fans may as well," he said. "We just made the decision to scrap the whole thing. We apologize to everyone tonight and will make it up to fans."
The giveaway was supposed to be for the first 15,000 fans at Tuesday's game against the Yankees. To make up for the inconvenience, any fan holding a ticket to the game will be able to get a new Ortiz bobblehead once they are reproduced.
The rejected bobblehead was made by BDA, Inc., and the company will also produce the replacements.
"We value our decades-long relationship with the Red Sox organization and its decision to postpone Tuesday's David Ortiz bobblehead giveaway," BDA said in a statement. "We're currently working closely with the Red Sox to ensure the team and its fans receive a quality product."
The Red Sox sent out a statement and apology via their website and social media several hours before a 5-3 win over the Yankees.

The White managaement would probably need to teach him that he needs to be offended by it.
Is there a bobblehead Hillary!?
If so, it should be repackaged: SEIZURE HILLARY!
P.C. is not about anybody’s feelings. That’s just the bait. It’s about power.
When bobble heads are outlawed...............
Maybe he heard it from Bill Russell about 50 years ago. BTW, the Bobblehead doesn’t look like Poppy. But leave it to the Libs ownership of the Sox to call it Racist. Now I suppose they won’t pay the vendor....
“Maybe he heard it from Bill Russell about 50 years ago.”
Perhaps-—and I loved Bill Russell.
I hear it often, that Boston is racist, but can never find anyone to state an incident to back up the claim.
I’ve lived in the Boston area my entire life and really do not know what they are talking about.

pink-lipped Negroes:
Some Negros (or Congoids) have pink lips. Most do not. But the pink lipped-Negros catch your eye. So much so, that a racial stereotype developed involving pink-lipped Negros.
If David Ortiz were a pink-lipped Negro, then sure, his bobble head should reflect that. But, as it is, it reflects a stereotype, not the real life man.
As for the teeth, Ortiz is gap-toothed. So that’s o.k.
And, as for the clenched fist, Ortiz is famous for his enthusiasm for the game. His enthusiasm is so infectious! Is that what the clenched fist is supposed to reflect? Or, is it communicating black power? The image is actually totally real. So, to any baseball fan, this part is also o.k.
Well those white lips look sorta, kinda like the old blackface stuff that they used to do back in vaudeville. That’s one thing I guess.
Who dat say who dat!??
It isn’t.
I have traveled all over the world and all over the United States. Boston and New England are no more or less racist than anywhere else in general in the USA. You can go up the street and meet someone of nearly any color who is racist, and walk ten steps further and meet someone as un-racist as anyone you will ever meet.
Ignorant people like to say it is so because somehow it makes them feel bigger in some way. The same people probably get all their knowledge about Boston or New England from watching movies with Matt Damon or Ben Affleck in them.
When I hear someone spout things like that, it tells me far more about that person than it does about the place or person they slander.
I may be mistaken but I believe the bobble head of Ortiz is meant to represent his speech on the field at Fenway after the Boston Marathon bombing. That’s about when the ‘Boston Strong’ line originated. His raised fist is not for black power, but defiance towards the terrorists.
Thanks for that great reply.
I’ve heard the racism accusation re: Boston often and just didn’t get it.
.
I did not think of that but they fo look ugly. Thanks
