Olympic Diving Pool Turns Green
NBC Chicago ^ | 8/9/2016 | Jim Iovino

The diving pool at the Rio Olympics has turned green, and inquiring minds -- like silver-medal-winning U.S. diver David Boudia -- aren't sure why.

["Wait is someone playing a joke or are we celebrating St Patty's Day early here in Rio?"]

Tom Daley, who won bronze for Great Britain in Rio, is equally puzzled.

["Ermmm...what happened?!"]

Whatever it is, it sure isn’t due to too many spectators...

Copper sulfate is blue. Copper is reddish-orange. Some copper salts are green. Even CuSO4 is green in aqueous solution.

Looking at the lime-green-Jello color of this pool though, I doubt it is a copper salt. The concentration would have to be high enough you could walk on the water.

The walls need brushed. The water needs super chlorinated. A huge dose of a polymer based (will suffocate any remaining live algae) Algaecide. Some sort of filter aid needs placed in the sand filtration tanks to clear the haze the dead algae will cause.

This should have never happened. Proper DAILY maintenance would have prevented this.

Chlorine and acid work well too.

No big deal. Just the underground leach-field water seeping in.

Woah...Yikes! That is terrible...Wonder if guy just did not go to doctor for an antibiotic soon enough? My daughter was a collegiate swimmer—had some “pool” folliculitis over the years...

Son got a case of it from a hot tub while on vacay...He was pretty surprised when I diagnosed it before the doctor LOL...He is worried about hair loss...if I tell him this, he will never go in a public hot tub again—probably good idea!!!

I draw distinction between private—i.e. ours or our friends’ home hot tubs versus the public hotel hot tubs. Public hot tubs have way too many opportunities for contamination :(
