There's no question that sleep is intricately tied to weight. How big a factor is it? Perpetual sleep deprivation can undermine weight loss efforts as significantly as adding a Big Mac to our regular daily diet.
Research is so strong for the case for sufficient sleep as a weight loss aid that as a nutritionist I look at sleep as the third element in the trifecta of factors that impact our weight, right alongside diet and exercise.
So it should be no surprise that sleep apnea a condition where people stop breathing during sleep, as often as 30 times or more per hour can negatively influence a person's weight.
...
We eat more when we're sleep deprived studies show as many as 550 extra calories a day likely because sleep influences levels of hormones that affect our feelings of hunger and fullness. We crave more carbs when we skimp on sleep, too.
Even when we cut back on calories, sleep deprivation can still make it harder to shed extra pounds. Researchers have found that, among study participants who have the same caloric deficit, those who are sleep deprived lose less body fat, and they actually lose more lean muscle mass.

I have sleep apnea but I’m skinny as a rail.
I wouldn’t doubt this. I know when I fall into a deep sleep my body becomes a heat pump which is great during the winter and not so great during the summer. I’m sure it burns more cals when it’s putting off the heat. Then there’s the importance of just getting the proper rest which I know is different for everyone.
Some lucky people can get by with as little 5 hours of sleep a night. Most need 7 or more.
What’s sleep?
FWIW, I always have a big crap within 30 minutes of consuming a Big Mac. How much weight can it really add if it goes through your digestive system so quickly?
less eats = less calories.
The less the calories, the more the body burns the fat.
End of lesson on metabolism ( :-) )
Oh, and here I thought it was ‘lack of self control’..........
Wow, thanks for sharing your bowel habits!
More like nutritional information on a Big Mac . . .
Nah, that’s just the Big Mac sending signals to clear the way.
You were getting pre-diabetic with that pee schedule. The way I understand it, the amount of adrenaline required to keep shocking the body awake to breathe hammers your insulin levels. I spent ten years in that hell ending up at 350 pounds. I am 230 now and a Crossfit beast... well, getting there. The knees are still healing. I’ll spare you the devastating details of being misdiagnosed with ADHD due to the pre-frontal cortex low oxygen damage. That is still on the mend also. Ten years of dipping down under 50 percent pulseox does take its toll. About the only funny part of the whole thing is when someone would wake me up during low blood oxygen periods. I once started talking like Stewie from family guy.
Although still not on par with waking up at 60mph to see the back end of a dump truck doing 10 in a construction zone. Had enough time to get out "OH SHBAM!! I got hit in the knee with an engine again and I think a buffer saved my life!!
Currently I'm diggin the Dreamweaver setup. Very unobtrusive. d:^)

I’ve been using cpap for over 10 years. Took a couple days to get used to the mask. The change is immediate in how much better you feel in the morning. So if you feel better you’re likely to be more active which would shed some pounds.
The tech advance in the device is amazing too. Just picked up my third from the doc a couple days ago.
Thats essentially what they are saying.
What's actually happening is that the fat content of the Big Mac stimulates the gall bladder into releasing Cholecystokinin, a hormone which, among other things, stimulates intestinal motility, ie, you cr*p out what was in there before, probably from something you are around 18 hours ago.
Interesting. Paradox may be on to something. See post #19.
