Hi All,
For those of you that use Norton to protect your computer, I have a question.
I am currently experiencing a dreadfully long (manual) full system scan. It used to take no longer than a couple of hours. Now, I can start it before I go to bed and it is still not complete in the morning. The only difference I can see is that this started happening after upgrading to Windows 10. So far, this has been the only issue I am experiencing since upgrading to Windows 10.
I have tried researching this online and in the Norton Forums, but I either can't find a similar issue or the issue is not showing as being resolved in the forum.
Anyone have experience with this? Anyone have a clue how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!
“Hey Ralphy Boy!” :) Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Why do you need a full scan. That IS a brutally long process but you’re right, usually in the arena of hours and not half days.
I think windows 10 is a virus and no wonder it is troublesome.
Norton is itself a virus. it will kill your disc drives. and you should compress every now and then
Have you allowed the scans to finish? Some settings may take extra time to catalog all the actual system files to ensure they are protected.
I wouldn't think a full scan should be necessary more than once a quarter and that a weekly quick scan should be sufficient unless you suspect some sort of issue.
IIRC, on OSX, I read one time offhand and while researching an unrelated topic, that Norton tends to make log files of previous scans and never deletes them. This tends to lengthen the scan time of future scans. The recommended course of action (recommended by someone in the Apple forums) was to delete old scan logs.
Soon after that I switched to Windows 10, for various reasons again unrelated to this issue you’re discussing. But I occasionally delete old scan files on my (Windows 10) computer and it doesn’t seem to have an issue.
Caveats: I’ve only run a full scan once since running Windows 10 (but of course Norton runs quick scans automatically and I’ve never had a problem with those running. Those are the love I occasionally delete. Norton actually caught a virus a few weeks ago so I know it’s working.). Also, my machine came with Windows 10 pre-installed. So there’s that. I’m also not sure if this will fix your problem as again I’ve never experienced it. Just something to try as its relatively easy.
Get rid of Norton. Unless it’s an old Norton Motorcycle.
after all that has been written about windows 10 why would you upgrade to it?
Norton Scan may be suspending when your PC goes into “sleep-mode”.
Check your energy-saver and display settings.
Correction (dang autocorrect): “Those are the love I occasionally delete” should be “those are the files I occasionally delete”.
Let me know if this advice helps you. I’d be interested to know.
Windows 10 comes with a free and very effective anti-virus system. It’s probably conflicting with Norton.
Step 1) Remove Norton
Step 2) Install Avast! free version, do a boot scan.
Step 3) Enjoy your computer...
I have zero clients that have Norton. It’s ALWAYS the first thing to fixing a computer with issues (McAffe as well).
Don’t feel bad! There are actually some folks out there who have never heard that Hillary is a criminal...
It actually happened inadvertently. I’m not sure how, but I had been ignoring the requests for upgrade for months and did not want to upgrade.
Where would I find to delete old scan files?
Right arm brother. :)
If it were suspending due to power saver settings then wouldn’t it just stop altogether and not start again? It does seem to continue to scan albeit slowly.
My computer had a forced Windows 10 update last month and now it doesn’t work. I can’t open anything at all - escape doesn’t work, control alt delete doesn’t work - ugh.
bling
Sorry to hear that. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised that this seems to be the only issue. Granted, I was just as happy with my Windows 7 and never would have upgraded. So I am not crazy after all....there is such a thing as a forced upgrade!I figured I must have done something wrong.
