They have a manual turbo DI gas engine in a Jetta size station wagon that would be nearly as good as a TDI for higher altitude cities and mountain work.

The older MK4 Jetta's (2000-2004) have 1.8T engines that deliver over 180hp but also get 30ish/mpg on the highway if driven conservatively. IMO one of the best engines available on any vehicle. I think the current 1.4T's are probably just as good and I'd be curious to learn of owner's opinions on those engines.
The Golf's are BADAZZ, TOO!!!

VW transformed the Jetta Wagon into the Golf Wagon, sort of a hybrid of both concepts now.
