When I was a kid, Daddy once told me to only buy corned beef made in Argentina. I forget why.
Anyway it was always good tho I haven’t bought any in 50 years or more.
That national place makes their roast beef by buying canner grade, doing a super fine grind and adding flavor and moisture. It cooks in a bag for four hours so everything stays together. So basically its a dense meatloaf.
Three or four years to rebuild a herd culled due to that last drought in Texas and points further north.
I get steaks on sale and make my own hamburger. I dont overwork or compress the meat and make the best tender burgers.
Pressure cookeds are great. Pulled pork turns out real nice.
I have never cared for canned corned beef. Mostly because it doesnt taste like that bagged corned beef you can buy and boil, or the stuff you make yourself.
That is actually different than what Mother made. One thing they did have in common tho was the round steak would be extremely tender.
I wish I knew how to make it. I think it is actually called chipped beef.
My late wife was born in the South but her Mother’s family came from Iowa. Her maternal Grandfather was a professional chef. She had a style of cooking which I was not used to but was still good. I think my favorite dish of all time was her enchiladas. It took a lot of work to make but it was worth it. She often would only cook it if I agreed to do some of the work.
Having lived in Hong Kong with the monthly scares about Chinese beef, pork and chicken I opted in Hong Kong to only eat imported meats from the US, Canada, N.Z-land and Australlia.
Dollar Tree sells Gossner milk in quart boxes, $1 each. This milk has almost a 1year shelf life and does not need to be refrigerated until after you open it.
It is pasteurized at very high heat and vacuum sealed in mylar boxes. It is real, liquid milk, not powdered, and it is delicious. At $1 per quart, it’s $4 per gallon, but less likely to spoil than a gallon if the refrigeration goes down in a storm.
I go to Dollar Tree just to stock up on it, for my emergency SHTF stash, usually getting about 20 quarts, or 5 gallons at a time, and just use it according to date.
Look for it on the store shelf, not in the cooler. It comes in 1%, 2%, and skim. They might not have all 3 kinds every time you look.
He walked us over and showed them to us. They were gorgeous AND they were delicious.
I bet we don't get that deal, ever again 😂
I tried a dollar store steak with eggs and grits for breakfast once.
I’ve had worse meals, but that itch is scratched and won’t bother me again.
I ate some granola and blue berries this morning. It was Mountain House brand. You just added a cup of cool water.
They somehow have figured out how to make powdered cream and make it taste good. I was surprised because I can recall when our parents would try to fool us into thinking powdered milk was the same. We could tell with the first sip.
It has a sort of "green" flavor. Might be from added lecithin. I've noticed it in Milkman brand (low-fat powdered milk) but not so much in the Kilm or Nestle (whole powdered milk) brands. It helps to chill it well after mixing it up.
Around 1965 my parents got conned by Wilson Meats. They advertised a side of beef at a great price but when we got back to the large freezer it did not look good at all.
Instead they switched you to choice. The choice sides looked much better. As it turned out they had a prime side for the same price. I think the reason was there was more waste on the prime.
Anyway despite getting taken we had great meat out of the freezer for a while.
Excellent idea; thanks!
It’s never worth it to buy cheap steak, IMHO.
I find the best way to buy steak is the whole large strip of the tenderloin at Costco. We just cut one up into numerous steaks (they’re the filet mignon) and barbequed for a birthday celebration on Friday. Delicious. We don’t have steak often, so when we do, we want it to be good.
I’d rather have a good hamburger than a cheap steak.
Are you sure that isn’t irradiated milk?
When we lived in FL, a local walmart started selling super thin steaks. It was in an area heavily populated with hispanics and evidently, that’s the way they like them. I’m thinking the dung they used for cooking fuel didn’t last long?
Horse! The faster, just as tasty cow.
