New York State will pick up the application fee for 2,000 low-income immigrants seeking to become U.S. citizens, Gov. Cuomo announced Thursday.
The lucky applicants will be chosen by a lottery system set up by the NaturalizeNY program, with help from the Daily News and multiple civic groups and charities.
“What the governor’s office is proposing here is fantastic,” said News Editor-in-Chief Jim Rich. “The Daily News is proud to be a part of this important program. So many hardworking people deserve this opportunity and we are thrilled to be a part of making it the dream a reality.”
The program will help immigrants cover the existing $680 application fee, said New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado.
“We don’t believe that citizenship should be a luxury item,” she said.
The News has assisted over 150,000 people through its annual CUNY/Daily News Citizenship NOW! Immigration hotline since it launched in 2004, said News Editorial Page Editor Arthur Browne.
“From the paper’s very founding, the New York Daily News has served an immigrant readership because New York has always been a city of immigrants,” Browne said. “They have been the backbone of the Daily News readership. We take our obligation to them quite seriously.”
On Thursday, Cuomo officially authorized the lottery program. Private donors will help the state cover the application fees.
“We are a nation of immigrants, and New York believes that diversity is our greatest asset,” he said. “Today we are sending a clear message — that we welcome you with open arms to join our community and grow with our economy.”
People who earn between $30,240 and $60,480 are eligible. To apply, applicants should visit NaturalizeNY.org or call the New Americans Hotline at 1-800-566-7636.
I have characterized the New York Daily News in another recent post as a libtard rag, an unrepentant organ for the Dumbocrats and one which delivers the most biased and therefore useless news. That they should be eager partners in this travesty should come as no surprise. That they should be proud of what they are doing here is disgusting. No wonder their circulation has plummeted to less than half of its previous numbers. So much so that they had to cut the price of their fish wrap.

How many American citizens earn less than that, and pay taxes on their earnings, and are not eligible for handouts?
Aha. There it is. Non-citizens earning this would in fact be signing up to become taxpayers. So why would they want to do that? Few will take advantage of the “free” $680, IMO.

I can’t tell you how excited I am over this news.
You see, I live in NY and one thing we don’t have enough of is poor immigrants that use Section 8, welfare, medicaid and food stamps, and make the neighborhoods they live in pretty dirty with collapsing housing value!!!
Thanks to the great minds and big hearts of NY bureaucrats (who will never be affected or even have to see these great unwashed) I might get more of these fine, low income immigrants in my neighborhood. Oh I hope some are jihadists! They’ll help with the dogs-pooping-on-my-lawn problem!!!
