This from Obama on Naval Funding: Hell! You can only rebuild those cables so many times.

My wife’s uncle had both of his legs cleanly amputated from a arresting wire snap.

I had major puckering when it went over the side. Looks like the deck crew did too.

Yep. That is one of the things they warn you about before you go on an aircraft carrier.

Care to elaborate as to what caused you to conclude:

1) Poor Seamanship?
2) Woman captain?

Yep
Served on the Coral Sea off Vietnam
What is weird... Standing forward the bridge and as a plane
Hits the wire - hearing a ping whizzing past you! Later found out
These were -rivets / unsecured bolts or other FOD that sometimes come off
The planes...(really were controlled crashes) made me stand farther to
Starboard
Lol

The flight deck is a dangerous place to work. Under any circumstance.

They record how many times a cable gets used, and after 100 or so times, they replace them.

My memory tells me that pilots come in full throttle, which the cable is made to withstand, so that pilot can recover and go around if something like this happens. Someone can correct me if my memory is incorrect.

You are correct. Full throttle when the hook catches. Just in case. Throttles to idle when stopped

They used to be able to predict the cable life very accurately. With all the corruption who knows now.

The pilot will give it full throttle after he contacts the deck in case, like you said, he misses a wire and has to go around and try again. Missing it to many times and running low on fuel, they will head to an airfield.
