Hitler's plot to kidnap the POPE

Antonio Nogara died in 2014.

His text about the papal kidnap plot divulged to his father was discovered only after his death and has only now been published.

The publication confirms several post-war rumours about the intended kidnapping of the controversial Pontiff who was often called 'Hitler's Pope' because of his seeming reluctance to speak out about the Nazi Holocaust of the Jews.

Critics allege that the time he spent in pre-war Germany made him sympathetic to the Nazi cause.

But his supporters say he walked a fine line between caring for his flock and trying not to make their lives untenable in those countries under Nazi occupation.

In the 1970s, General Karl Wolff – supreme commander for the SS in Italy after the Nazi occupation which following the toppling of Mussolini – testified that he had been ordered to kidnap the Pope in 1944.

He claimed Hitler told him: ‘I have a special mission for you, Wolff.

'It will be your duty not to discuss it with anyone before I give you permission to do so. Only Reichsfuhrer (Himmler) knows about it. Do you understand?

‘I want you and your troops to occupy Vatican City as soon as possible, secure its files and art treasures, and take the Pope and Curia to the north.

‘I do not want him to fall into the hands of the Allies or to be under their political pressure and influence. The Vatican is already a nest of spies and a centre of anti-National Socialist propaganda.’

Maybe this will silence the haters who said Pius XII was “Hitler’ Pope”.

Probably not, the slander will live on...

The editor screwed up and flipped the picture. I guess folks who drive on the wrong side of the street can’t tell left from right. (Look at the map on the wall behind the Führer)

Someone who believes that would simply infer that the Germans intended to take the Pope into “protective custody.” They won’t be swayed at all.

I read the headline as “Hillary’s plot to kidnap the pope,” and I thought, she’ll get away with that too.

She wouldn't need to kidnap the present Pontiff. ('nuff said.)

It might have kind of funny had they tried to kidnap each other.

Friar Tuck’s “God forgive me”, each time he beat one of the sheriff’s men’s brains in.

The cutline for the picture was the initial clue, although even if the picture was correctly oriented, it still wouldn’t be quite right.

“She wouldn’t need to kidnap the present Pontiff. (’nuff said.)” Hmmm...

He may not be a Pacelli; but he is (like it or not) still the Pope. I ask you to please show a modicum of respect for Il Papa.

May God bless you and yours...

It is an ignorant revisionist thing to call him. Until well into the war the Church was some of the only people speaking out about abuses in occupied countries.

Oh, Hitler. I thought it said Hillary, and even for her this is a little weird.

I read a good book called God’s Bankers. It was a pretty neutral telling of the Vatican bank, all the positive, and the very shady stuff too.

He had the best explanation I’ve ever seen of the Vatican in WWII. They weren’t Nazi advocates even though they coddled them in some ways. And even though some priests were very pro Nazi and helped Nazis escape to South America.
He said how in the 30s, Nazis were bad and the Vatican knew it. They were anti jew as was the Vatican at that time also. But they were into that whole pagan norse crap and the pope didn’t like that.
BUT, the pope feared that going full out against the Nazis would have two results. One Hitler might simply ban Catholicism in his territories and maybe even occupy the Vatican.
And two, communists would take over. At that time Communists were dynamiting churches and executing clergy and had made religion flat out illegal. Hitler showed no intent to do that, even though he perverted religion into his service.

So the Vatican made the choice of lesser of two evils, but very much in the hope of church survival and that Hitler could eventually be moderated. They were 100% Certain that Stalin could never be moderated.

I’m no Catholic, but it really is a slander to say they were pro-Nazi.

In my opinion, the major duty of Pope Pius during WWII was to avoid martyrdom. Consider how difficult it would have been to elect a successor. Consider the opportunities for Hitler and Mussolini to interfere in the election.
