The African migrants giving up on the Chinese dream

Guangzhou, China The heart of Little Africa -- or Chocolate City, as it has been dubbed by some -... Dieng tells CNN that locals hold their noses when riding the shared lift in their residential high rise, while a Chinese landlady complained to NetEase, a Chinese news portal, that her African tenant's black skin color came off on the "snow white walls" -- echoing a recent racist TV advert that suggested African blackness can be washed off.... "The Chinese would prefer Africans to come in for two to three weeks, buy goods and go home. China is for Chinese."

Interesting story, but the numbers are suspicious at best. By 2012, as many as 100,000 ...in late 2014, it said just 16,000 Africans called the city home... "China's competitive edge is fading. "I've heard good things about Vietnam," says Dieng, stirring his coffee, "or maybe Bangladesh."" A race to the bottom!

It looks like there was a China-to-Africa export boom that was very profitable for some African entrepreneurs. These located in China for a time, and other Africans provided support services for their expat community.

Now the economic variables, including commodity prices and demand for Chinese-made goods, have shifted. African businesspeople are going back to their home countries or looking for new opportunities abroad.

Interesting. My first thought upon reading the headline was ... what? Why??? This makes no sense.

Seeing that it’s import/export business related, that’s a bit different. I would think the regular Joe would really rather migrate just about anywhere else.

I’m also surprised that it’s not the other way around. If anything, I’m surprised that the Chinese aren’t trying (and haven’t been trying for decades) to export their surplus male population. They seem content to sit in their corner and watch as eeslam colonizes the formerly free world instead.

Whatever, I guess.

I've been around Asia some, including China and Tiawan.
The food was great! And the people very nice.

I carried a card with my address in English and Chinese for the cab drivers.I don't think, I was ever 'taken for a ride'.
Do not try that in Chicago.

The Chinese are doing a lot of investment in Africa, which includes a lot of Chinese construction workers and other infrastructure-support people. Not a drop in the bucket, in terms of their overall population, but very significant economically in the areas where they’re concentrated in Africa.

There are still a lot of them in Guangzhou. I’ve been told 400,000 by local cab drivers (who don’t like them at all).
