When Clayton Brumby fired his last shot, he said a smoking hot casing flew out of the pistol and went down the back of his shirt. Both arms flailed up in the air, he said, his finger still on the trigger. The gun fired.
"Dad, Stephen's been shot," the father heard his 24-year-old son shriek.
The father said the bullet he fired ricocheted off the ceiling and struck the 14-year-old's jugular vein. The teen was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where deputies said he was later pronounced dead.
"The gun didn't kill my boy," the 64-year-old father of seven said Monday. "I did."

Talk about your freak accidents.
A tragedy for all involved.
The Nazi gun grabbers will be doing their blood jig tonight.
What a man, no excuses offered. That’s how men used to be. God help him through this loss.
Another thread on the subject I post just so you all can check it out http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3446240/posts
When I first heard about this, I though this might be a case of someone why just shouldn't own a firearm.
More and more, sounds like a freak accident.
Sad situation.
ditto.
Training to prevent this kind of accident is provided by that archenemy of the left, the NRA.
More kids drown each year in 5 gallon buckets, falling down stairs, or drowning in pools, than die from gun shots.
Accidents happen.
RE archenemy of the left, the NRA:
Damn, right. Once In, Never Out. Never Run Away.
Proud to be despised by the despicable.
Open collar shirt is a potential brass catcher, as are scoop or V-necks (attention, Ladies)...Button up...
That said, if you shoot enough and long enough your skin will meet a piece of hot brass...Learn to deal with it...Grab it thru your shirt and hold it away from your body...It will cool in seconds...
Meanwhile, refrain from dancing a jig, keep finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard, and your weapon pointed downrange...
Sorry a son lost his life, and a father lost a son, but this is negligence...
Can one of you gun folk tell me in lay men terms (dumb NYer) what went wrong?
Not much to tell. When the firearm was shot, it discharged the empty shell, which is pretty hot. The hot shell bounced off something, went down his shirt and burned him, caused him to jump and shoot off another round, which hit his son.
For me, that explained a lot. Thanks.
Sound like the Son wasn’t were he would have been safest.
I feel sorry for the father.
The firelines I’ve been too in NJ, only 1 persons per position is supposed to be across the forward line. If there were two you had to put the orange muzzle block in and lay the gun down on the station.
If you violated this, they blew the horn and everybody had to stop, you were admonished and then everybody gave you irritated glances.
What a tragedy. Needless, it sounds.
How does one live with killing their boy, whether by gun accident, car accident or whatever.
Geez.
Bull. This was not an accident. It was negligence. I’ve had hot brass go down my shirt many times. You deal with it appropriately / safely when you have a hot gun in your hand. Yeah, it burns and you’ll have a welt, but you know that possibility exists any time you are shooting a semi.
