This is something M$FT has been trying to do for years.
Win 10 is a start.
Rather than you “owning” the software, M$FT wants to ding you with a periodic subscription fee.
It’s coming.

Which makes Windows 10 my last system. I don’t mind buying it, but I don’t want to rent it and pay a fee to keep it.

I got saddled with Windows 10, and it shall be the absolute last Windows garbage I ever own.
From here on its gonna be the old XP loaded on a Parallels virtual machine, absolutely isolated from the Internet, running on a Mac.

Meanwhile, Linux and its app ecosystem are getting better and better. It’s just a matter of time.

This is not a microsoft specific thing. A lot of companies do this and it has been coming for a while.

what’s the kb number? Usually they start with kb? I have lots of laptops which still have 7 and love them.

They’ve already started with Office 365. Adobe started this whole ball rolling a few years back when Photoshop went subscription. The nose is under the tent. Just like baggage fees with airlines, it’s started and they’ll never go away.

I’m not going to pay for Win10 on my laptop. Looks like I’ll have to upgrade to Linux for it. So far, I’ve managed to keep the Win10 virus at bay on my desktop.

This looks like a system file that comes with a new build, not (at least for now) part of a patch or “upgrade” to the current build.

I’ve got the GWX exe to stop the 10 from loading but it’s always good to anticipate.

Do you not think at some point Microsoft will see the writing on the wall with all this backlash and relent? They are better off just charging a one time fee with support, at least it worked until now.

Ive managed to keep the Win10 virus at bay on my desktop. They know when you're sleeping.... You'll wake up one morning soon infuriated, wondering 'who the hell is Cortana and what has she done to my computer!'.

Agreed - you can never tell with MS. I’ve lost all trust in them to do the right thing.
